I understood French at work!
So I work a customer service job and today these two guys came in and obviously had no idea I speak French. While I was waiting on them they kept yapping to each other and while I couldn't understand everything word for word, I was able to get the general idea of what they were talking about. Apparently they had seen some guy on the bus right before they'd walked in and thought the way he was dressed was really funny, at least from what I could put together from their conversation and how one of them kept laughing and gesturing at his clothes. I could understand whole phrases and individual words, but not quite enough to explain the entire conversation.
Anyway, it was the highlight of my day. I wanted to speak French to them at the end of the transaction but I always get nervous when trying to speak French with native speakers, mainly because the times in the past when I've tried, they get really excited and start rambling to me in French and I find myself way over my head rather quickly haha. While I was listening to them though I kept smiling more and more because I was happy I could understand so much and because they were so funny making fun of that poor guy. They kept glancing at me, but I don't know if they could figure out I knew what they were talking about. lol. They only spoke to me in English. Then when they left I felt like kicking myself because I hate missing opportunities to speak French but I'm also afraid of putting my foot in my mouth especially when my boss is around haha.
On the other hand, understanding a language other people think you don't know when they carry on right in front of you feels totally stealth, which I find really amusing.
The other day, I was at a fancy opera house in Boston, and I overheard three young adults (two women and a man) drinking beer and speaking French. The only words I made out were many occurrences of "ça va" and "un petit chien". I still felt proud of myself for recognizing two words though!
Congrats! About talking to natives without being as fluent as they can be, just think the other way. How would you welcome somebody trying his best to be understood in your language, making lots of errors but at least trying? Would you be pissed or bored? No, of course! You'd be delighted to see that the other person has such an interest into you without even knowing you, that he made the effort to communicate with you no matter how! This is priceless, and the best way you can prove your openness of mind! I am sure that in 99+% of cases, the person in front of you will be thanking you for at least trying! I have never heard anyone making fun of somebody trying to speak their own language. Myself at least, I am honored that you made the effort to spend so much of your precious time learning my language!
Tu fais des progrès, bravo ! ;) Un jour tu trouveras quelqu'un à qui parler avec qui tu ne seras pas trop nerveux , peut être en dehors de ton travail , sans ton patron aux alentours ;.. :))
putting my foot in my mouth
what is that ??? haha , I don't know that expression :)
| "putting my foot in my mouth" This means to say something embarrassing or tactless about someone and to hurt their feelings. It can also mean to reveal more than you intended/reveal a secret to the wrong person. Afterwards one feels like they should have kept quiet.
I am in Vietnam. There's a fashion store near my place , it has a name "Ici". I thought that it is such a stupid name for a fashion store, but when I learn French for over 1 month, I knew that "Ici" means "Here". Still a weird name but smart, isn't it. After that, I realize there are so many stores with French names around where I live, so interesting, like : Soleil, Parc, Tous les jours...and I now can understand all of them. Amazing feeling
Yes, when you learn a language, so many things are illuminated around us ... :)
Bravo ! Un jour, je souhaite écouterai et je comprendrai le français parlé naturel aussi.
Yes, I kick myself for not speaking spanish to people, but hey! There is always a next time! Join the club! And yes, its AMAZING to eavesdrop of conversations in foreign languages
On February, I was participating in an international marathon with my schoolmates. While we were waiting on the starting line, I heard two boys speaking in french (it was bloody fast for me back then). I told my friend (he was next to me) about it, he knew I've been learning French so he approached les garcons and said "Bunjurr". "Bonjour" they replied. I was thinking "what! my friend gets to talk to french people and here I am not" so without hesitation I said "Comment vas-tu?",</pre>
re= "Bien" me="Comment vous s'appellez vous?" re="Je m'appelle Reouxahgfcdhgcas (I didn't really catch it)" me="Oouhh (pretending to get it though), Je suis Vaxter"
Woww. It was the best frenchie moment I ever had. Haha thanks to my idiot friend.Bisous

Yay for you! I was managing a European shoe store when two French speaking couples came in. I said something relevant to their conversation. They were a bit surprised, but very friendly. even coaching me on my pronunciation. I was so happy to engage with them. Next time I'm sure you'll put yourself out there. It seems to me they're happy to engage and appreciate the effort. Again, props to you!
