How to make sense of kanjis? Images made into android app “Remember the Kanji N3”
I have been dealt with the toughness of remembering kanjis for long. To learn the N3 Kanji part of the JLPT exam about 6 months ago I learned various of vocabularies with a really great android app for listing them Japanese Kanji Study - 漢字学習 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mindtwisted.kanjistudy&hl=ja). But still I can' get hold of their graphic meaning so I decided to create a simple app for remember kanjis through images Remember the Kanji N3 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nihongo.remember). Some of it characteristics are
Combine graphic to radical methods to explain.
Short explanation of each of the images. Each image is funny and more clearly remembered with the explain.
Quizzs that support repetitive remembering to speed up your learning.
So try it and good luck with your learning!!!
Looks pretty interesting from your screenshots. I would try it out, but for me Google Play says "this app is incompatible with your device". I notice the page says "new - added support for Android 6.0". Therefore I'm guessing this means the app just doesn't support 5.1.
If there aren't many people still on Android 5.1 or below, please don't feel a need to work on making the app compatible just for me. I was only going to check out the app for a few minutes to see what it's like. I already know all the N3 kanji.
I hope other people will try it out as it looks good. ^^
I'm pretty new in this app thing so thanks to you now i know I must lower the min support because it turns out 25% device are lower than android 6.0. I tested and it worked well for 5.1. I will upload in a couple of days so hopefully you could have a try. Cheers
Cool. I like trying out lots of Japanese learning apps and sites. I'll keep an eye out for it. ^^
Just tried it out. Nice job so far!
A couple of things I noticed though:
Some of the meanings have been put on the wrong kanji. Example: 察 says "bureau, board, office, affair, conclusion, court lady". This sounds like the meaning of 局. In fact the app shows the exact same meaning text for both 察 and 局! (This might be the only one that is wrong. I haven't checked all of them.)
On both quiz types, on my phone the 4th answer choice is always off the bottom of the screen and I have to scroll down to find it. There seems to be empty space above the image during the quiz, and the answer choices might be a bit bigger than necessary. It would be nicer if all 4 choices could be seen at the same time without having to scroll.
(My phone is a Sony Xperia Z3, which has a 5.2" screen, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop)
One thing I think would be nice is letting the user swipe left/right when viewing a kanji, to go straight to the prev/next kanji in the list.
Anyway, as I said previously, I'm not looking to study N3 kanji. So this app isn't going to be on my phone long. It was nice to be able to check out your app though. Thanks. ^^
Thanks! You made valid points so I have fixed them except the swipe thing which a little bit tricky. Trying to figure it out.
I didn't know of this. I'm still having a hard time remembering Kanji. It's small and just looks like a picture, but I just can't remember.
Thank you for sharing this information. You helped me a lot and others that are trying to memorize. Here's a linglet.
I tried version 1.4.2 to see the changes you've made.
Thanks to the change in layout of the answer choices list, the quiz is fairly nice to use now. Still only enough space to see about 3½ of the 4 answer choices, but this is better than it was and can just about make out the words in the 4th answer choice without really ever having to scroll.
So now I thought I'd try doing the whole quiz one time, to see what happens when you get to the end of the quiz...
However, there seem to be a few problems with other kanji too. Looks like it wasn't just 察 after all.
The 199th question was particularly problematic...
I had encountered the first answer choice earlier in the quiz, so I at least knew it wasn't that. But I didn't know which one of the other 3 answers would be correct. I guessed "environs, boundary, border, vicinity" because out of those three choice this one would be the hardest to draw a picture of... And my guess was correct! :P
I carried on without getting any answers wrong, until, right near the end, on the 308th question the following appeared:
Again, I knew I had already encountered one of the answer choices (the 4th answer choice). And I thought I might have encountered the 1st answer choice already too. But out of the other two choices I had no idea which one to choose. I picked the 2nd answer, but it was wrong... It was actually the 1st answer choice. ^^;
冊 doesn't mean "code, ceremony, law, rule" at all. That's a meaning for a different kanji... (probably 典?)
There were some other mistakes, but none were as impossible to figure out as these two questions.
The kanji for one question was 夾 (which is not even a jōyō kanji). I could figure out this was meant to be 卒.
Another question said 由, but the answer it wanted was "oil, fat" (which would be 油). The same 由 kanji appeared as a different question later on in the quiz, where this time it wanted the correct meaning instead of "oil, fat".
If these things and a few other problems I haven't remembered can be fixed, the app is fairly nice now. ^^
Thank you for your review. Still suprise by the number of bugs are there :) , all of them is caused by wrong image
Great understanding of kanjis and thanks for your time again. I intend to upgrade the app to support more kanjis and associated vocabularies so the app could be more of the benifit for users and for me also ^^. So if you have any ideas to improve and make it more of a joyful exprience ???
