Hawaiian Numbers

Why is the number one different from the others. The only reference to the Ho'okahi I can find is when it is used in 100 or 1000. My wife grew up in Hawaii knowing 1 as ekahi as I am seeing it in my Hawaiian language book.

My dictionary says that the single digit numbers are preceded by 'e- except kahi which is usually preceded by ho'o. It doesn't give any explanation and I don't know how common that is today (the dictionary was compiled in '75).

Ho'okahi usually implies alone or singular. 1 (one) as in a counting number, is 'ekahi.

I also learned the number One as 'ekahi. Ho'okahi, as explained to me means/meant a singular occurrence.
