Do you or someone you know have a romantic partner whose primary language(s) was initially different from yours? Did you struggle at first to communicate but eventually broke through the language barrier?

Duolingo is working on a new project about language and love! If you or someone you know would like to participate, please use the link below to fill out our form.

The project: We’re telling the stories of romantic partners who originally experienced a language barrier but ultimately overcame it through language learning. Ultimately, we want to share the power of language as told through stories of LOVE. ♡

The details: If you or somebody you know has a story that you believe fits the project and they are based in or can be in the greater NYC area in mid-December or January, we would love to hear from you! Partners of all backgrounds and genders welcome.

To submit: Please fill out this form.

When we need it: Please submit entries by Monday, December 17th 2018

What to expect next: If selected, we will follow up to schedule a brief video conference call to discuss any questions you might have about the details.

Sometimes learning a language gets tough and it is in those times that we benefit from encouraging success stories. Share your story and let’s inspire people to keep learning.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Well, my story began in NYC but I'm afraid I can't be there this winter. Met a guy at a friends house and we really hit it off in spite of his shaky English. Before the evening was over he invited me to go see a play on Monday and I accepted. He showed up at my house on Sunday ... he had confused the names of the days. Five decades later and we're still together. His English has improved and I've learned his language.

How very cute... as someone who is basically only attracted to non-native English speakers, this will be me at some point, certainly. I hope this program is a success. <3

To be honest, when I saw this post I was anticipating the endless question "which language to you sounds most romantic?" And then I would have said, Russian...it's my love language if there ever was one. My soul, however, still speaks Spanish. I can write some poetry overnight. ;P

"I can't say what made me fall in love with Vietnam. That a woman's voice can drug you? That everything is so intense -the colors, the taste, even the rain? They say whatever you're looking for you will find here. They say you come to Vietnam and you understand a lot in a few minutes. But the rest has got to be lived." From Graham Greene, "The Quiet American". I have a personal story related to this on many levels and have told bits and pieces of it here. Won't be available for NYC but if something gets going for Saigon, I am in. We could have a meeting at the Continental Hotel in downtown Saigon, where Greene wrote the book.

Bonjour à tous ! I'd like to share with you my story. I'm a Vietnamese girl who has never travelled abroad but have a huge love for France and everything about it for many years. But that isn't really a reason why I am here for nearly 5 months now. I met a French guy 7 months ago and we have been constantly talking since then. We shared our interests and communicated in the third language which is English. We had feelings for each other and were in a distance relationship, both admitted that it's a bit tough for us sometimes to express our ideas, thoughts and feelings in English, so I decided to take small steps to learn French, et voila! Seeing me learn French made he very glad and he's always there to help me with it. But unfortunately, things between us didn't work out so well, it somehow affected me for a while, these days I didn't want to practice much but now I'm good. Now we still talk to each other, but like friends, he told me he didn't want to stop talking and sharing his life with me and teach me French, but it's better to step out of the relationship. Tbh it's not easy for me because I still have feelings for him but I'm not agaist it anymore, at least I have someone who's there to speak French with me and motivates me in my French learning journey...

Bonjour ! I have similar experience as yours--met him, fell in love, learning from each other including language. I have had my heart broken very recently and same as you, my purpose for learning was so I can communicate better with him. But he cannot deal with long distance as he has many hurtful thoughts and our relationship has ended :(

So now, I am looking for a new purpose for learning. Since I've already done many lessons, I thought I should just continue for myself and not for him. I am very happy about the supportive Duolingo friend/s in the club who are helping me get through this tough time, and are encouraging me to continue improving my skills.

This community is great and let's not stop learning because of a person or situation. Good for you that you are communicating but for me it will hurt, so I'm not sure I can handle communicating with him again after the breakup.

But even if you lose contact with him, I suggest still continuing your learning journey for yourself because language is a powerful tool and who knows, we might be able to use it one day for a different purpose. :)

Joyeux Noel !

Bonjour ! I'm so sorry to hear that you're in the same situation as me and I can understand how much it hurts. I tried to disconnect and find other things to distract myself from thinking about him and our memories but it didn't work so well.. But I finally realized that I just need to change my mindset a little, accept the fact that we're not meant to be and it might be better this way. So now here I am, back on track, still learning by myself and I'm so happy to find such amazing and supportive people on Duolingo who empower me so much. I totally agree with you we shouldn't stop learning because of anyone or any circumstance, do it for ourselves. Thank you so much for sharing, I hope you will find a better and stronger purpose to learn languages. Have a wonderful day <3

https://www.duolingo.com/stephygiraffe

Thank you for sharing your positive words and want for learning, it inspires me to continue and see that even with challenges in life, we still strive to be better and move on for ourselves. I know it is not easy, me too it has been hard to continue and have not had the energetic mood to do exercises, because it reminds me of him, but I know one day it won't affect me anymore. Although I only occasionally travel and have not yet been to France, just the fact of learning a new language motivates me, because it is a powerful communication tool that perhaps one day will be of better or greater use--like when I travel there or meet French people along the way or who knows, live and work there--than my initial purpose of just learning for my now ex-boyfriend. I've also started with my Spanish lessons again, at least I am proving to myself I'm learning these for my own good :) Je te souhaite une bonne journee !

Growing up we moved every couple of years and many , many years later I have no idea of how many places I have lived and continue to move but have one more or less permanent home in another country. At the moment, I am trying living in two places, splitting up the year at each place. And the stories never stop...and that is good.

Sharing stories can be inspiring for others also, for their language learning.

Also it may reveal for some stories additional reasons and inspirations that motivate people to learn languages.

And this may even encourage others to see these are motivators for them also, and assist others with their learning.

When we understand our motivators, especially the things that make our heart sing, it can be a useful fulcrum to take advantage of to assist in (y)our learning as well as providing you/us greater fulfillment in life.

And this also gives me a chance to pause and think about why for myself, one of the great motivators for why I am so passionate about learning languages, and reducing the barriers for ANYONE to learn languages.

Because - it gives me access to being able to see the world through different eyes.
That not only lets me have a glimpse at the world through different points of view. It also give me a chance to see my world and my language, through this ability to glimpse the world from other perspectives. And this includes being able to think in different ways.

This is one of the reasons I am so passionate about the richness and worth and culture that Duolingo nurtures.

And this is not just for my benefit. For I am also hoping it will be for the benefit for the world that will be going on beyond when I am here, when I am no longer a thinking mind in this world.

It is a gift I give with love, to have a chance to be part of a small amount of the tinsel for - for the benefit of the future.

p.s. I am hoping the down votes on your comment, RoseBTSarmy, will change direction soon.

After all, for much of the world that follows religions such as Christianity,

In this season by our culture,
Is one that encourages us to reflect,
What past has been, and we have done,
And what we may take on yet.

To see the world through others eyes,
To seek kindness in our soul,
To glimpse how much we are one,
And find strength to help us to be whole.

Anyway, I just ( some will feel a sigh of relief ), just lost my patience to rhyming.
I see nothing in the comment by RoseBTSarmy, that is not within our guidelines. And often it is, if we allow and really listen to others point of view, it also helps us understand things about ourselves.

So I am so thankful you are expressing this valid opinion. ιροc usagip

My wife of thirty year speaks Farsi (Persian). I quickly abandoned trying to learn it as too difficult - different alphabet, sounds which fall outside the range of spoken English, reading left to right, etc. Fortunately, she is totally fluent in English. Over the years, I have managed to pick up the most basic expressions. Our kids understand pretty much everything and could speak it if necessary.

My boyfriend learned (and still is learning) ASL (or American Sign Language). I am mostly deaf and my grandparents are as well. I know ASL isn't on Duolingo. We even have name signs for each other and mine is for my preferred name (I'm non-binary) This month will be our 6 month anniversary. Last month, for our anniversary, he learned how to sign one of my favorite songs. I can hear and sign but ASL is so much easier because then I'm not straining to hear him. I just thought this might fit. lol. Sorry for writing so much. Love y'all.

That's a really nice idea, hopefully they will have it ready by Valentine's day! I'd like to read love stories in other languages, I'm already a sap for the ones in English so... I'd also like to see more stories in general. The Spanish ones are pretty good, but I'd like to see more informational/cultural ones too and in more languages. I know that the same language can be spoken over many countries but it'd be nice to read little snapshots of different people and their culture/country through this site.

Thanks Duo!

If you or somebody you know has a story that you believe fits the project and they are based in or can be in the greater NYC area in mid- December or January, we would love to hear from you!

I'm having a hard time understanding this part. When you say "...and they are based in or can be in the greater NYC area in mid-December or January...", are you saying that these stories must have taken place in NYC? Or, are you saying the person has to be in the NYC area to be apart of this project? I don't plan on filling out any form since I have no personal story and I don't know anyone with a story like that, but I was just curious what you meant. It's not your fault but merely my inability to comprehend what you wrote. I'm sorry if my question is rather stupid, but could you elaborate please? Thank you in advance!

Hi MasterZsword,
The stories themselves don't have to have taken place there. They just want to know if people who have stories they want to share will be able to get to NYC area in mid-December or January. :)

I always loved studying new languages, that's why last summer, in some boring days, I started studying Spanish on Duolingo. One month later, I knew a super interesting Mexican guy who is living in Los Angeles. He is studying Italian at University. Our friendship started by helping each other: he is helping me with Spanish while I'm helping him with Italian. He will come back to Italy on April! It will be funny having an English-Spanish-Italian conversation! :)

I don't quite qualify, but I picked up a second language because I fell in love with a Mexican! He grew up bilingual, but I learned Spanish in order to communicate with his family, who speak varying amounts of English from near-fluency to none at all. Every few months we visit some of his closer relatives and I can see how much I've improved since my previous visit ^_^ <3

My story is a little chaotic ... my partner has spoken extremely fast Afrikaans, horribly ungrammatical French, and some English that wasn't nearly as inappropriate as it sounded at first. His English has gotten better since I've known him, but he still has the loveliest accent. People tease him about it, which makes me mad, because we wouldn't be together today unless I'd stopped to ask where his accent was from.

It's been about four years since I have logged in. I thought I'd share a quick story.

I've always had an attraction for women of color and decided that I would learn another language in hopes of displaying my dedication to learning different cultures.

When I began my Spanish journey, I spent well over a year studying 6 days a week for around 6-8 hours a day, some with Duolingo but mostly with books. It wasn't until I reached out and reconnected with Spanish-speaking strangers and friends for some real life practice that I actually began to retain what I had been learning.

Among those was a friend I went to middle school with, who hails from Guanajuato, Mexico. Long story short- we started dating, got engaged, and we now have a son who is one year old.

If Duolingo had never came to be, would I have my wonderful family? I'd say probably not. So, thank you.

My story like many stories. My husband is a man and I am a woman and there lies the barrier to our language barrier. Or as they say “Men are from Mars and women are from Venus”. It might be better if we spoke different languages. Then I wouldn’t understand the ridiculous things that come out of his mouth. I don’t even want to talk about my 17 year old triplets.....lol I’m just kidding. I have a great marriage. Not perfect but great and so are my teenagers.

actually, i started learning the language because a guy i liked knows french and other foreign languages. we couldn't communicate so the "friendship" dissolved when he went back to his country. i couldn't understand French and he was shy to speak broken English. then i landed on this app about a month ago. i am learning very fast. my friends think that am addicted to the app, they don't know the reason behind it. i always look forward to doing my daily practices and now i want to learn almost all the languages. at first i didn't trust the app but i am going to learn all i can manage because i don't want to lose another chance with any one in future. PS do we have people interested in Ugandans :):)
