I remember seeing that Indonesian and Malay differed on the word for “Egypt” somewhere on Wikipedia, but now everywhere I look on the internet, “mesir” is the only recognized Indonesian word. Did Egypt use to be called Egipti or something in the past?

"Mesir" is from the Arabic word of Egypt while the word "Egypt" may come from the "Copt" of Coptic race of Ancient Egypt.

Since the Arabs came first as traders in the Nusantara long before the British and Dutch, so the word 'Mesir' stuck.
