I'm assuming that "pola" and "pākaukau" are exceptions to the KE AO rule that use "ke", right?

Yes. So are spoon/ke puna, plate, dish/ke pā, cup/ke kīʻaha, towel/ke kāwele. There is a pattern here.

Ha! Yes, there is a pattern, except that cup and towel are not exceptions. But certainly bowl, table, spoon, and plate are.
