Ka poʻe / nā poʻe

I have a bone to pick with Duolingo. Iʻve always been taught that "poʻe" - people - is always singular and uses ka, never nā, yet I keep seeing "nā poʻe" in Duolingo lessons. AFAIK, poʻe is a noun like sand. Youʻd never say "nā one."

My kumu ʻōlelo said ka is correct, but heʻs heard manaleo use nā poʻe. He uses ka.
