The • in た•べる
This may seem like a silly question, but what does the • stand for or represent in た•べる, I've been curious about that ever since I saw it on some flashcards. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
It marks the end of the kanji reading; in "食べる” the kanji is read "た" then "べる” is given; this comes into play for different kun' readings of the same kanji. For instance a more common reading of "食” is "く・う”; that is, "食う” is pronounced "くう” not "たう".
