I have finally finished the Norwegian tree after almost a year and 10 months!!! It has been a long 22 months but I did it. I could have finished a lot sooner but there were many weeks that went by that I only did a lesson a day because I would hit a slump. Thanks to the streak system, though, I kept with it. This whole time, my family has had no idea I've been learning Norwegian because I wanted to keep it a secret. Now i'm wondering if I should go ahead and tell them, or wait a little longer so that i'm close to being fluent and can just start talking to them in Norwegian. Duolingo has taught me a lot, but i'm still nowhere near fluent. Should I wait or tell them now? :)

Does your family speak Norwegian ? If yes, I think you should tell them, in order to practice with them so you can bettered. If no, i don't know, do as you want ^^

No, they don't speak Norwegian and they probably haven't even heard it before. They might think I'm crazy when I start speaking it out of the blue. Lol

Congrats! That's fantastic that you pushed yourself and didn't lose focus! (I'm still trying to do that. :P) I get the one lesson a day thing, as I had been doing that for a bit as well during unmotivated periods, but this is a good example that the streak system really can help push someone to continue language learning. It's really up to you about speaking to your family. I think either way they will be proud / excited. Just do what ever feels comfortable.

Once again congrats on completing the tree, take a Lingot!

Gratulerer så mye, Hannah!

I think you should tell them. If you have any Norwegian family, they'll be thrilled to know, and if your family doesn't speak Norwegian, then it's not like they're in a position to judge your fluency. If you wait, I think you might just keep setting the bar higher and higher for yourself, never really feeling ready. Or maybe that's just me projecting. ;)

He problem is that I haven't had much practice at all with speaking it. I've only gotten used to reading, listening and writing.

Gratulerer :) It sounds crazy to speak fluent with your family in Norwegian without letting them know about it for months. It will be very suprising for them.

Ja. Jeg spiler litt fiolin men jeg spiller mandolin oftere. Morsmålet mitt er engelsk. No one in my family speaks anything other than English and there isn't even any Norwegian ancestry in us. I just wanted to learn it because I liked the sound of it.

595 dager—utrolig! Strålende jobb med å bli ferdig med kurset. Morsom forklaring på hvorfor du bestemte deg for å lære norsk. Nå må du reise til Norge.

I would love to go to Norway... I really need to practice speaking with native Norwegian speakers.

Kansje vi må gå til Oslo og ikke til Bergen. Fordi i Bergen de snakker en ganske annen norsk dialekt. Men Oslo er veldig bra også selvfølgelig.
