  • Writing direction :

Arabic is written from right to left.

  • Short vowels :

There are 3 short vowels in Arabic :

al-fat-ha ( َ ) corresponds to (a) - It is written over the letter

aD-Damma ( ُ ) corresponds to (o) - It is written over the letter

al-kasra ( ِ ) corresponds to (i) - It is written under the letter

  • To indicate that the letter is silent we use :

as-sokoon ( ْ ) - It is written over the letter

  • To indicate gemination we use :

ash-shadda ( ّ ) - It is written over the letter

  • Long vowels :

There are 3 long vowels in arabic :

al-alif ( ا ) corresponds to (aa) - it is written on the left of the letter

al-waw ( و ) corresponds to (oo) - it is written on the left of the letter

al-ya ( يـ ) coreesponds to (ee) - it is written on the left of the letter

Examples :

(ba) is written in arabic ( بَـ ) - (baa) is written in arabic ( بَـا )

(bo) is written in arabic ( بُـ ) - (boo) is written in arabic ( بُـو )

(bi) is written in arabic ( بِـ ) - (bii) is written in arabic ( بِـيـ )

(b) is written in arabic ( بْـ )

(bba) is written in arabic ( بَّـ ) - (bbaa) is written in arabic ( بَّـا )

(bbo) is written in arabic ( بُّـ ) - (bboo) is written in arabic ( بُّـو )

(bbi) is written in arabic ( بِّـ ) - (bbii) is written in arabic ( بِّـيـ )

(bb) is written in arabic ( بّْـ )

  • remark :

ash-shadda is written under al-fatha, under aD-Damma, under as-sokoon, but above alkasra
