Racist Slur Not Removed From Leaderboard

On December 9th a Duolingo user called me a racist name on one of the French leaderboards. 9 days and 2 abuse reports later and nothing has been done about it. The comment is still there despite Duolingo’s policy that abuse will not be tolerated.

Please do not do a public call out in a post, such as here.
Also we recommend that you do not respond to someone who is acting inappropriately.

Please make sure you include details of your Duolingo account.
and also a link, a web link, to the discussion that the abuse occurs in.
Also to point out clearly the issue that you are concerned about.

I read that you state that you have submitted 2 abuse reports.

I do not have access to reports of abuse submitted to Duolingo.

I have taken time, as a volunteer, to check out information that I can access, and so far have not been able to pick up the issue that you are referring to.

The comment made by the honorable pentaan, refers to this :

If you go to your home screen, you should see this link on the right side of your web page. For many displays through a browser you will need to page down to see this. It should appear just below the information about your Daily Goals, and above the information about your achievements.

However - I would recommend following the recommendations in "How to report abuse" , and follow the links and advice recommended there. And ensure you provide detailed information.

The first abuse report #1184118 was filed on 12/10/18.

The second, #1190658, was filed on 12/17/19.

I’m not calling anyone out. I’m doing what I can to get Duolingo to take care of a problem, and if that means going public with their inattention to the issue, then so be it.

ok - I have filed a report - via a different means, about this post here.
I have been unsuccessful at locating the incident that you mention, from the information that I have access to. So I have not been able to file a normal report.

If this issue is changed, could you also perhaps hop back here and let us know ?

For now - I am off to bed so I am better able to face another day.

About your issue, could you give more details, in particular about "leaderboard": do you mean the leaderboard of your followers/friends ? A [leaderboard in a] Club ? A leaderboard somewhere else (in which case, where?)?

Maybe you gave those details in your reports (#1184118, #1190658) to Duo. But if not, it may be part of the reason why they didn't act on it: they may not know what you're issue is exactly as "leaderboard" can refer to several things.
If it's a Club, for instance, you may want to share more details to Duo with a reference to your first report as, for instance, the name/identifier of the Club where it's happening. It may help Duo staff to treat it faster.
Of course, if you already shared such detailed information, then you can forgot the above lines about sharing more details.

I have provided screen shoots of the comment, the poster's name, as well as the Leaderboard ID number. Today, December 23rd, is the 13th day, and nothing has been done about it. And yes, I did file a 3rd report.

Thank you for moving this post SaraBethCu to the correct forum.
I have filed my report about this issue, and I now have had response back that it has been passed on to the relevant team.

This team also will have the additional information, as per your comments here. I would suggest that it is now a matter of waiting until this team is able to attend to this issue.

From the sounds of it you are in a club ? Is that correct ?

Hi SaraBethCu. I've sent you an email. I've narrowed this incident down to 5 people. Unfortunately, I have to be able to verify the incident for myself before I can take action. In the email I sent are instructions that might (I hope!) help me be able to take care of this situation. If not, I won't give up! We'll figure this out.

I have bad news and good news. Bad news first. You posted the code here instead of in the 3 year old discussion I linked to in the email. So, either the club was already full, or people from here flooded in and filled it out of curiosity. But, it's full now and I can't get in. :(

Ok, Good (Great!) news. As Linda mentioned, staff received her email and so it's just a matter of time. My console was designed to moderate the forums here but not Clubs. Some of staff's are built for both. They won't be stalled by a full club. :)

this might be an odd question but can you give me a link to the post, I would like to see it.

People always seem to bring up harassment as an issue but I just never see it. maybe cause it is in languages I dont learn.

I understand that you are curious.
Also I am glad to hear that you have not seen problems of harassment, such as this.

We are an open learning environment. But we are a guarded community, and I reassure everyone here, issues of harassment are taken very seriously here. Though at times, it can take some time for an issue to be seen to. We are a global site, with a huge number of people from all over the world who use this site. And - yes - there is also a huge volume of reports that come in.

So it can take a while to read through them. I assure you, they are all read through.

I would also like to encourage people to not seek to draw attention to inappropriate behavior.

We have been a successful safe and guarded site for quite some years now. (launched back on 30 November 2011) And part of that is that we encourage people to also be responsible for the way they choose to act on this site.

For you to choose to not give more fuel to someone that is acting inappropriately. To show your strength of character, and a super power everyone in this community has the power to utilize.

To not feed inappropriate behavior. To not respond to people who make inappropriate comments. To down vote inappropriate comments. And where relevant, to report them, as SaraBethCu has done.

Thank you merkavar for when you choose to excercise appropriately you influence at moderating our community by your actions.
