Is this a loanword from French? There driver = chauffeur, which is pronounced similarly.
Anyone knows the word's origin?
Yes, it's from 'chauffeur'. Dutch loanword, and I guess it was a French loanword for the Dutch.
Other related Dutch loanwords : 'setir' = 'stuur' = steer, steering wheel. 'rebewes' = 'rijbewijs' = drivers license.
