Speaking Japanese

So I've been learning Japanese and decided to pick my Russian studies back up. I started at the beginning in case I had forgotten any of the basics. In the first lesson, there was a voice activity that had me speak into my microphone to test my speaking ability.

I'm at level 9 in Japanese, with a 25 crown level, and I haven't encountered a single one of these voice activities. I would really like more practice with speaking. Is this not offered with Japanese or does it come later?

There are no speaking exercises at all in the Japanese tree. What's more, a while back in this thread, we were told that they cannot be added in Tree 2.0, though I don't believe that it was ever specified why. :(

If you want to practice speaking, you could always try the site supernative.tv, they've got a whole section on speaking to the microphone.

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. How about a good workbook to practice writing?

For workbooks, I'm not sure how much help I can be. I've been using the Genki series which is good, but somewhat expensive. I haven't really tried any alternatives, so couldn't really say whether you'd be better off with something else or not.

That being said, a lot of my own writing practice comes from writing down something I've seen, heard, or just come up with by myself. As such, I'm not sure that you really need a workbook, it's really going to come down to how you best study. Just make sure that you properly learn how to write the characters first (if you have Android, the app Kanji Study is excellent for this).

Hopefully, this was at least some help.

Right with you. Not sure if it ever comes but, if I had to guess I'd bet no. The course is still pretty new, and they've said they're working on an update for it. Hope that will have the microphone used a bit.

There are no pronunciation practice in this course but as an alternative you can use Forvo. It may helps you with the pronunciation of some words and you have the benefit to hear it from a native speaker. What I like to do is to pick a random text from internet, read it aloud and check the pronunciation on Forvo. This way I learn new words and better my pronunciation.

I don't know if there's a way for you to purchase it, but Minna no Nihongo is really useful to have if you're interested (It's relatively cheap). It comes with CD for listening too.
