New Hindi community moderators
We are delighted to announce that now we have two new community moderators for the Hindi forums _gs9 and LeMaitre! They now have a green ring around their Duolingo avatar (डुओलिंगो अवतार), just as the rest of the forum moderators.
Our learners/users have known them for a long time. They have been adding great value by sharing their knowledge and providing answers to the questions posed by our learners. Their contribution is helping the Hindi team to refine the beta course content so that the course can reach the desired level of maturity and thus become a full-fledged Duolingo course soon.
In addition to what they have already been doing, they will now also help us with keeping the discussions clean, especially the sentence discussions. The sentence discussions are meant as an additional help for the future learners of the course and we always like to keep them free of any irrelevant comments. So please consider not to ask questions that are not related to that very sentence on the sentence discussions. Instead, consider posting them on the general forum (right here).
The Hindi team along with the Duolingo team looks forward to our continued language learning journey together!
Namaste all! I must say that I am honoured to be a part of the team now :) Thank you very much to everyone! बहुत धन्यवाद. I will wear my green circle with pride. I hope that I will be able to help the learners :) Huge congratulations to LeMaitre too!
Welcome _gs9 and LeMaitre! मुबारक हो । Thanks to all for this labor of love. A terrific resource. I'm finally learning to spell Hindi words correctly instead of mangling them!
बहुत धन्यवाद! I guess _gs9 has said pretty much everything there is to be said. :) Yes, it is an immense privilege to be a part of the outstanding Hindi team and to wear the green badge. I will try my best to help our growing Hindi community in any humble way I can. Congratulations to _gs9 too! :) I'm looking forward to this enthralling experience. :)
Why is "तारा" "the star" and "आकाश" "sky". Duolingo cuts a point if I type "the sky". You should give a warning but not cut a point from user. This "the or not the" problem should be dealt with a warning and not with a heart loss.
You are right about such errors. Please do keep in mind that this course is currently in the beta phase and that means currently such issues are being ironed out. By the next month or so, you will find that such discrepancies will have gone.
In your example both, "star" and "the star" should be accepted for "तारा", and "sky" and "the sky" for "आकाश". The only exception will be that for the words with images, you won't be using the definite article 'the'.
Thanks, I know that it's a beta. That is why we beta-testers are here so that any errors or bugs that inadvertently crept in, are not in final version. From next time I will post any errors or bugs in discussion and not in comments.
First of all, thanks for being such a valuable beta-validator!
If you think your answer was right while the Duolingo provided answer does not make sense, please report using "समस्या की रपट लिखें" and choose "मेरा उत्तर सही माना जाना चाहिए।". This method works better for our workflow.
You can alternatively also choose to use "वाक्य पर चर्चा करें", please cut and paste your answer. This requires us to take a few extra steps to make the correction. However, if you think that we have not accepted your valid correction in the past, this is a good place to call upon us to focus on your suggestion.
Let us know if this doesn't make sense. Thanks!
I am an English speaker who wants to learn Hindi. Is there a program for this? I tried to use the Hindi to English course, but that does not work for me.
Hi triciai! Unfortunately, there is no course for English speakers to learn Hindi at present, only the reverse. Probably when this course graduates from beta, we may start the reverse course, but we can't guarantee when this will happen. In the meanwhile, this website should help you : Learning Hindi!. It's created by one of our team members _gs9 :)
i want to go back to my english account, but that seems to be not possible
Click on flag on top right. Select add a new course(नया पाठ्यक्रम जोड़ें) . It shows list. Select I speak English( मैं बोलता/बोलती हूँ: select . अंग्रेजी ). Click language you were learning previously( e.g. Spanish, स्पेनी, you can guess the language from flag or image ) and after that click on switch to course(पाठ्यक्रम बदलें). On mobile apps just select the language you were learning from list.
