Writing/answering directly in hiraganas during lessons on mobile?

Hi there,

Yesterday I was back on Duolingo after a 4-months-break, and back on my japanese lessons (I'm french but there is no lesson in japanese from my language).

At first, I was surprised to see that for some lessons/exercices, the app asked me to write answers directly with hiraganas, using my keyboard. So I installed the japanese keyboard on my phone, and that was really awesome since I did not just have to choose between multiple answers, but instead write the answer in japanese, hiragana by hiragana. Quite a challenge at first, but it was really helping to remember everything better & faster.

Imagine my dissapointment today when I did not have this type of answers anymore! I'm back with the multiple choices in japanese, and that's now really boring compared to yesterday...

So my question at last (sorry) : how do I enable writing in japanese with keyboard on mobile?

Any help will be much welcomed, thanks!

I am not sure, but it may be that the question types where you have to type answers yourself show up at higher crown levels. I think I have seen that in a few other languages. To get the first crown level, you basically just get multiple choice questions. But on higher crown levels (3?), you will get questions where you have to type the answer.

But as I said, I'm not sure. Last time I used Duolingo, Japanese was not here. And since the whole system had changed a bit, I decided to clear off all my trees and start afresh.

Thanks a lot for you answer. :)

I'm not sure it might be related to the crown levels - or if it is, it's working in a weird way. I thought too at first (my first level of japanese is crown 3), but then between the first day back and yesterday, the direct answers were gone! Even at crown 3 (i've tried every level to see if one could offer again the option). Since I'm a mobile user, I tried on desktop, and there it was: on desktop, you can choose to enable the "keyboard answers" instead of multiple choice answers. So I'm wondering how to enable it on mobile. That's frustrating!

I don’t think it’s related to crown levels. I reached gold in many Japanese skills, yet I can’t type in Japanese.

I have the exact opposite problem. I just came back to try to finish my first run through Japanese after a few months off. Now there is no word bank input, only typing. I have no idea how to type Japanese on my phone. For example I can select the letter for hi but no idea how to make it into bi. I would like to switch to word bank for Japanese on my phone but don't see any way to do this. I fear this is A/B testing. If so Duolingo, just give us a choice already. All this is doing is making me throw away the rest of the work in a lesson.

I wish I could type in Japanese on mobile, it helps me learn better than picking from a word bank.

Like you I have the Japanese keyboard enabled on my phone and only rarely does DuoLingo ask me for answers in hiragana or katakana. I have not been able to figure out any pattern.

A solution I have been using so far is to scroll down the choices the input method has given you. You will find an answer without kanji. But Duolingo sometimes only recognizes answers with kanji, and sometimes with only hiragana.
