Использую and Пользую

Hey could someone please the difference between:

Использую

Используюсь

Пользую

Пользуюсь

In order to master these words I need to know the full function behind them, so I can use them comfortably in a sentence.

Спасибо большое)

They are different shades of "to use." From my research, it seems to go like this:

Пользоваться/Использовать (imperfective): To use continuously. (Note the grammar difference. Ending "ся" takes instrumental, "ть" takes accusative. They both mean the same thing though. )

воспользоваться (perfective): To use one time (Note again: takes instrumental.)

попользоваться: Colloquial of воспользоваться

использоваться: Passive: to be used

пользовать: It used to mean "to treat," like a doctor treating a patient, but nowadays it's outdated and archaic. Don't use this verb.

Maybe a Russian speaker can confirm this. For the likes of Пользоваться vs Использовать it seems sometimes even Russians can't agree other than to say depending on the context one "feels" more right than the other, but there's no set rule. Использовать can act as both a perfective or imperfective verb. If you're a 2nd language learner you'll be understood.

попользоваться: Colloquial of воспользоваться

Not quite. "Попользоваться" is indeed more colloquial but is has a distinct flavour of using something (e.g. a tool) and putting it back or returning it to its owner afterwards. "Воспользоваться" is much broader: Oн воспользовался своим положением = He (has) used his position (of power/influence). You cannot possibly replace it by "попользовался" in this example.

Thanks, thumbs up.

But could I say something like, "Я попользовался и выбросил,"?

Yes, you can. Hence my "putting it back or returning it" comment is not entirely correct either.

Пользоваться (чем) салфеткОЙ. Использовать (что) салфеткУ. The problem is not which verb to use, they have same meaning, but the sentence will be arranged differently around these verbs. I am a native speaker ^^

Использую - I will use this napkin and then throw it out. Пользуюсь - I use this car for a long time. Используюсь - They are used me (passive). Пользую - ungrammatical of использую. Don’t use it.

"Пользую" is just outdated. Used to be similar to treat/handle, like "пользовать больного".

Please, do not use "Используюсь" and "Пользую". They are grammatically correct, but both sound extremely weird (I'm a native).
