Hi dear community!

I just read about Latin coming to Duolingo, which is great news! Hopefully we will not wait for a couple of years to be in Beta though :)

With the beginning of 2019, I was thinking of which languages could be added (In Beta phase) this year here, so this is my top 5:

  • Arabic
  • Bulgarian
  • Lithuanian (or Latvian)
  • Finnish (or Estonian)
  • Bengali

Of course, this is my personal top 5. Which one is yours?

Happy New Year, everybody! Love you all!

  1. Ancient Greek

  2. Slovak

that's all really, for new languages... as I have too many languages on the go already as far as languages go, but I would really like to see

  1. Stories for more languages (and more stories for the ones that have them are always nice)

  2. Bring back the conversation bots!

  3. More outfits for Duo!

I second MissSpells about bringing back the conversation bots on mobile devices!!! In addition, the achievements dashboard serves no purpose at all. It takes up a lot of space within the app wastefully and therefore should be replaced.

Yeah, this one is a biggie. I did a brief search, and found this post from three years ago asking for this feature, and many other posts since then. I wonder what's been taking so long?

Nice, I can speak tops like 20 words of Maltese, which is interesting because I am Maltese, but was raised in the UK, I tried learning it alongside Dutch but they're both not Very English friendly languages so I decided to drop the Maltese until I've got a better grasp on Dutch, because I absolutely love the langauge

any other mistakes, please let me know.

Greenlandic is a subset of Inuktitut; there are a number of others that no-one has yet specified, but I think they should be grouped together.
'Egyptian Hieroglyphics' is not a language, but a writing system. 'Scottish' also isn't a language; as you've already mentioned Scots Gaelic, are you referring to Scots?

Perhaps there is a corresponding number of people who want Welsh for Spanish speakers, but who haven't contributed to this discussion as it is all in English.
There is, of course, more justification for teaching Welsh from Spanish, as the former is at least spoken in hispanophone South America, whereas it would be difficult to get by in Catalonia knowing only some Catalan but no Spanish.

I'd want Icelandic, Arabic, Finnish, Thai, and Estonian in that order.

And even though it's more than five, Catalan for English speakers would be nice, as would Afrikaans, maybe Maori would be cool, Amharic, Tagalog.

Edit: And after reading other's comments, I've been reminded that Greenlandic and ASL would also be cool additions. Maybe also more Indian dialects like Tamil or Punjabi. And after reading up on Toki Pona, that would be cool too! And while on the topic of minimalist languages, maybe Solresol.

And as for general wishes, more uses for lingots!

2 languages I'd love to see would be Slovak and Bulgarian. Getting some languages like Albanian, Macedonian, or Croatian would be nice, but I'll have my hands full this year with the ones Duolingo already has to be starting more haha. I agree with MissSpells that it would be great to have stories for more languages.

Latin being added gave me renewed hope for Gothic. We applied for that waaaaaaay back when the incubator first came out, and we didn't realise how slowly (for good reasons) the language teams would be added. With Latin being added I think that, after Ancient Greek, etc. are added, Gothic might stand a chance.

I doubt I'll be able to start another language in 2019. But if I did, having to choose between Spanish and Arabic would be nice.

Spanish is looking towards local politics, while Arabic is looking towards retirement and travel.

If I start another language this year (a big if though), it will be one of the following:

Spanish (I already listen to lots of music in Spanish that I don't understand + fab travel opportunities). German (always business or travel in continental Europe). Estonian (file under small cool countries, plus close to my native Finnish). Czech (file under small cool countries). Russian (a big country, or well a civilization, that has remained a bit too unknown to me).

Only one of these is not in Duolingo, so Estonian would be the addition to make me happy.

If wishes could be coded into a website, please could I have the following at least into beta this year:

  1. Arabic
  2. Old English / Anglo-Saxon (the sources are scant and difficult, yes, but ~34,000 words and 50,000 meanings surely is sufficient to make a Duolingo course?)

Well, I discovered the other day that I really actually need to actually learn more of the linguistics in English, as in I am actually relatively abysmal at my own language, so I guess that's on there. My number one is Dutch, and then Maltese :)

https://www.duolingo.com/Judit294350

"Linguistics" (the science of languages) or grammar (how words and inflections are used within a language)? The latter is easier but here in NZ it has been dropped in favour of self-expression which leaves people unprepared to learn new languages as they don't even know how their own language works (not to mention some pretty poor "self-expression" as well).

Frankly, before adding new languages, I think that Duolingo might do better by devoting energy to dealing with longstanding issues with its existing courses. This has apparently been happening with the Swahili course (new course team members and audio) (woot!), but there are some other courses that have been moribund for months or years with errors not being corrected, Tips & Notes being incomplete, etc. (I won't name examples since we see the complaints in the forums all the time). And yes, the courses are created and managed by volunteers and it is not Duo's fault if the volunteers lose momentum -- but when a course becomes moribund, I think that Duo could perhaps take active steps to jump-start the team.

I also think that the "Stories" feature of Duolingo is fantastic and should be expanded to more languages. There have been many calls in the Italian forums for Italian stories, which would be a wonderful addition.

As for new languages, I personally have long wanted to explore Inuktitut, Tibetan or Burmese (the latter two because of their beautiful scripts). This said, I don't expect them to be added any time soon.

I also definitely plan to do the Yiddish course if/when it is completed.

While it is not on my personal list, I note that Duo does not offer any Dravidian languages. The Dravidian language family is now the largest language family (by number of speakers) with no courses on Duolingo. Query whether the time has come for Duo to consider adding Telegu or Tamil?

iOS: I have been experiencing delayed access to lessons and exercises in the past few months. Duo should look into the matter and solve the problem in 2019.

Oh, haha! Nice one. Not sure if that's teachable on Duolingo, but it sounds quite nice if it were possible, oder? :)

Everything is teachable ;) Not sure whether it's for everyone though.

Because let's say someone is scratching the side of their nose and since you understand some body language, you might think, "Ha! They're subconsciously angry!" (And a little self-fulfilling pat on thy back)

The caveat is when you're scratching the side of your own nose in a perfectly fine conversation and then you ask yourself, "What am I angry about? Nothing happened!"

And there goes the "analysis paralysis". :D
