Genki I Textbook

Has anyone had an experience with learning Japanese through the use of the Genki I Textbook? If so, how was it? Would it be useful for a person like me, who is currently coming back to learning Japanese after 8 months?

I recommend it. Duolingo is a great companion for it, as they cover similar concepts, vocabulary, and structure. I currently do the Genki vocabulary on Memrise to learn the words before I get to the chapter, then I read through the chapter and do the exercises (I usually skip the pair work). Once I've completed that I do the workbook/audio exercises. If you do go that route, do get the workbook, I think you get the most benefit from it.

It depends. It's a great book but not if you study on your own. It will be much better if you study it together with a friend or in a class.

Is the textbook intended for those studying with a partner/teacher? I've heard reviews similar to this, but unfortunately, I don't really have any friends to study Japanese with :(

The Genki textbooks are provided and used for Japanese lessons at a small school, which my brother attended many years ago. I don't know much about the textbooks but when I looked at a PDF copy I have, they seem to go in depth into learning the language more than Duo does.

I have had the experience of studying from a Genki textbook by my own, and it's actually good if you have motivation to learn Japanese. However, I wouldn't recommend using it as your only source for Japanese.

But under your circumstances, I think the book would be nice for you.

It’s very good, in my opinion. I suggest it.

In my opinion it is one of the best, if not the best book for learning Japanese. I highly recommend it. Make sure you get the workbook with it.
