Czech music to listen to?
One of the things that helped me learn English was listening to English music and reading/learning the lyrics. So I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any modern Czech singers/bands. Thanks in advance!
I maintain a list of Czech language learning resources, there's a section at the bottom with 28 Czech bands/singers and some of their best known songs:
Edit: My favorites are Divokej Bill & Wohnout. The only rappers I know of are Reginald & Sharkass.
I'm not sure if it's good idea to have Xind X here - he uses non formal Czech, that can be a bit confusing for new learners.
I'm still trying to find some more myself. Music helped me with Russian. ^^ But here are some songs I found:

That's all I got for now, I'm just starting out. I'm really hoping to find some more techno and remix songs eventually. Hope this helps at least a little bit. :)
Thanks, these are great! As a native Russian speaker, I would definitely prefer not to know what the lyrics in the Russian songs mean, although I gotta say that the most popular Russian band rn sings in every possible language except for Russian.
Не за что! What is wrong with the lyrics in Russian songs? 0.o Most are about love I think. I like Юлия Савичева, Нюша, Слот, Nuteki (though they are from Belarus XD), Вирус and of course I found quite a few awesome remixes in Russian techno and dubsteb. Oh! And many awesome covers, like Hello, Diamonds, quite a few Linkin Park songs, ect. Мне нравится руская музика! (Sorry, my spelling and grammar are still awful, though I try everytime I have the opportunity XD)
Your Russian's quite good! Although there are two с's in русская just like in English and музыка is with a ы. Russian rap lyrics can be REALLY weird, aside of being racist/sexist quite often, the music you're listening to is mostly from the '00s though, I haven't heard of Нюша and Савичева in quite a while, you should try listening to Время и Cтекло and Monatik.
Пасиб! Я попрабую. ^^ And thanks for the corrections! Я знаю Время и Стелко! As well as all of the parodies. XD Monatik I don't know, I will look them up. :) Also! For Czech music, try this website called radio garden. You can tune into live radio anywhere in the world! I like to listen to radio in Pilsen, because that is where my grandma is from. :)
Zuby nehty (used to be called Dybbuk) and Psí vojáci are very good bands. Their lyrics are fairly easy to understand, and they were underground bands during communism. Zuby nehty are still playing in Prague!
Actually I saw that Dybbuk was actually performing at the Beat festival at Lucerna in December. Unfortunately I was unable to come, a pity...
Ahoj, tady máte něco z punku: Tři sestry, Znouzecnost, Visací zámek. Z undergroundu nesmí chybět: Pražskej výběr, Už jsme doma. Hip hop: Prago Union, PSH Country: Fešáci, Michal Tučný Folk: Hradišťan, Čechomor Písničkáři: Karel KRYL, Jarek Nohavica, Pavel Dobeš, Ivo Jahelka Techno: DJ tráva Tekkno: Luxor, Strahov, Psytrance: Višná za bory crew, Psyla D'nB: ATD crew,
It really depends on the style of music you like. What is "modern" for you? Pop-music, rock music, indie, hip-hop, electronic or other styles I do not even know?
Well, pop and rap are my favourite styles but any of those you listed will do, honestly. I added modern mostly because there was already a thread about classical Czech music.
I don't listen to rap at all, but this guy (Marpo) https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=marpo seems to be well known. He did a very popular box match against his Slovak colleague https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=rytmus+jebe
This pop/rock group (Wohnout) is quite good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpJV6ZCo84c
But I grew up on older music. This (Lucie) is the best of the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s in mainstream rock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaEERbPpIX0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SW-q1XPkMQ
Or Mňága a Žďorp, also having roots in the later 1980s but famous mainly in the 1990s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oPESZixGmc
When it comes to contemporary music I mostly listen to less mainstream stuff.
Thanks! Really liked Svaz českých bohémů, I even heard a few words that I understand, haha.
I recently heard Bara Basikova, brought me back to the early 90'ties..at home have three albums of her but also one of iva Bittova
Basiková is great. Especially in Stromboli (still active) and Precedens.
Bittová is Slovak. I like a lot of older Slovak music. Žbirka, Hamel, Ursiny, Varga and others.
Your list surely shouldn't miss Aneta Langerová, one of today's most popular czech pop songwriters. Her recent album "Na Radosti" contains very beautiful music with smart and interesting lyrics. I saw her live two times, one time at the 'Letní scéna' at Vyšehrad in Prague, unforgettable concert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9gqp9Ij8HI
Thank you for this tip. Very beautiful songs! The lyrics can be found in the internet. I found a Website with lyrics together with tranlations to different languages: Of course you can find there lyrics for other artists too. Edit: I tried to insert a link, but I failed to do it right. My second try: Lyricstranslate
