This is most interesting and helpful. I note many similar words in English so this list will help me easily remember a whole bunch of new words. Now I know why the "usual suspects" comment of Chinese words in a similar way in the lesson sentence discussion. In a similar vein, I note much interest in Latin here in Duolingo and have discovered Latin at the Saigon Zoo and parks near there where the Latin name for specific trees is included with the Vietnamese. Any idea of Vietnamese words from Latin, besides the letters?

Thank you for your time in assembling (assemblage?) this list.

I'm not sure about Latin in VNmese. my guess is that of scientific names in plants & trees, animals, insects, etc. just like anywhere else. if you go to any zoos, aquariums, insectariums, botanical gardens, natural history museums, you would probably see a lot of those nomenclatures.

The scientific name is in Latin, as you noted, but no one cares or knows about it, except for biologist, maybe. For other words from Latin, I can only think of chemical element name (which is a scientific thing too), most of which are via French as well. Only natri ("natrium", sodium) and kali ("kalium", potassium), are definitely not from French.

Reason I wondered about Latin is the Catholic priest(s) who came to Vietnam a long time ago and changed writing system to Latin alphabet and to spread Catholicism. I thought along the way some Latin words would have been introduced besides the science stuff.

To me this is no doubt the most useful thing i've ever seen on duolingo discussion just in case i'll start studying French someday soon.:)) Thanks so much!

What a nice list! I'd like to add that "kem" is also "ice-cream" in north and both "xa lát" and "xà lách" are from "salade", though the former refers to the dish.

updated.

to me, "kem" means the generic "cream", whether it is ice cream, cake icing, cream soup, hand cream or body lotion, toothpaste, etc. on the other hand, "cà rem" can only refer to "ice cream".

as for "salad", I usually say "xà lách trộn" when it's not the Eastern-style salad "gỏi". I guess our different uses are due to dialect/regional variances.
