Online Update?

Ok, so I was off of Duolingo for 20 minutes, and it updates.
So, I have a few questions:

  • What's this "Part 1" and "Part 2"stuff about?
  • Why did it update?
  • How did it update so fast?

If you know anything about this, please tell me! I am very confused.

Thanks!

@DragonFyre

I had seen this grouping layout with line separators in the two French tree8 + 12 courses.

BTW: The skill count was the same like with the normal tree design/layout.

There are additional dedicated "Checkpoint" skills before each checkpoint.

Your Spanish from English course:

  • Skills: 34/113+2
  • Lessons: 48/520+5

It's still 113 skills and 520 lessons.
Nothing which you have to worry too much about.

How did it update so fast?

I’m not very familiar with web design but doesn’t that just basically require someone pressing Save on Duolingo’s end? Like if you go to Wikipedia, you can’t live edit an article. The general public has no idea what you are doing in the editor until you press Save changes. And saving a document that’s mainly text really doesn’t take that long, no matter how long it took to write it.

It looks like it only affects the Spanish tree (I checked my Swedish and Italian trees, and looked at the French tree to see if it applied to the "core" languages). It seems to be a new tree layout, possibly as part of the new redesign. Maybe they're doing an A/B test?

That's interesting. I doesn't affect any of my other trees as well.
Hm.

Same. My Greek and Hebrew trees are fine, but now my Spanish tree feels much longer. Did they add more skills or something?

Yep. The French tree updated with the Part Xs as well. The German tree doesn't show anything yet. :) AP4418

My French tree hasn't updated yet, so they are either still rolling out the update or it really is an A/B test.

@Dessert-Rose

Hi Amy,

Quote: The French tree updated with the Part Xs as well.

  • Skills: 5/119+2
  • Lessons: 4/598+0/6

I see you are on staff tree8.

Last time I checked it, it had Part 1-7.
Each group had a dedicated "Checkpoint" skill before the checkpoint.

There had been MANY more checkpoints.

And the good thing: There was even a LAST checkpoint at the bottom of the tree.

The 2nd tree design - with Parts grouping / line separators - of the staff Tree8 is IMHO a huge improvement.

There are some slightly differences for the two Parts vs Non-Parts versions of staff tree12, but not so big as with tree8.

The normal tree12 version fortunately does not have so MANY skills after the last checkpoint like tree8 had it with the 4th last checkpoint.

French background how to specifically catch one of the better tree A/B versions

https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/29069435$comment_id=29810695

The normal (non-parted) French tree8 definitely seems to have the worst tree design from all four possible A/B versions of staff tree8+12 (tree2+tree3 are left out!!).

I really like the French contributor tree3 with 26+ dedicated grammar skills.

A very good tree design, like the old or updated English->Portuguese course where MANY grammar skills and "tips and notes" are available on the web portal!

The Spanish tree has been updated yet again! This is very frustrating, as I worked hard to get back my golden owl. Now, I have lost it for the second time. Grrrrrr

I only had to test out of a new checkpoint to get my owl back (if you know 2/3 of the material you should be fine). This is probably the third time I've had to get my owl back but it was easiest to get back this time.

That's unfortunate. Though I bet you will get it back, again.

Update: I took the last checkpoint and passed. Got my golden owl back. I only wish I knew how well I did. Woo hoo

How many questions did you have on the last checkpoint? I'm trying to do it now. I don't like how it doesn't show my progress through the test. I'm pretty sure I'm getting most of them right, but there's no feedback either way.

No update for me yet.

Can anyone shed some light on what the update does/adds?

https://www.duolingo.com/Jr.Foraker23

Nothing super important. The checkpoints have been moved farther apart and are now called "Parts." Like, there's "part 1," "part 2," et cetera. It just makes the tree seem longer since the checkpoints are spaced further.

https://www.duolingo.com/merkavar

Are there more or less check points?

Cause if the check points are the same, just spread out more, it should make the tree shorter.

Fir me the last check point is like half way down the tree.

Meaning you can’t just test out in the 2nd half. Each skill individually.

https://www.duolingo.com/Jr.Foraker23

Oh, yeah, there are the same amount, which was five, but I guess I never thought of testing out. I was just saying that for people who were going skill by skill that it would be longer, or at least seem longer. To me, the tree seems more intimidating.

As always.

A/B tests...

Have you already been on the Spanish course with 113 skills and 520 lessons before?

Houston we have a problem.

There is a 2nd thread started later discussing the same Part1-x and checkpoing tree redesign A/B tests.

I just did and passed the final checkpoint but didn't get back the Spanish owl or the crowns I lost by opening the tree. This may be because there seems to be a whole new section but as the checkpoint at the bottom of the new section is already marked as complete I can't do it to test out of it. It seems I will have to do them individually. I am not going to open the French one yet in case the same thing happens. I have been working on the from Russian versions of these languages instead of from English as it accomplishes twice as much so I wasn't planning to revisit these trees but was curious and have paid for it:( Curiosity killed the owl:(
