A new redesign on the big courses
Have any of you noticed a new redesign on the big courses? I've only seen it on the Spanish from English and the English from Spanish courses, and the redesign replaces the "[Spanish flag] Spanish skills" with "Part 1" (or "[English flag] Unidades de Inglés" with "Sección 1") and there are five sections. At the end of each section, there is a pentagon skill-like thing with a castle on it that says "Checkpoint." These are golden when you pass them, but the end checkpoints are not golden yet. (I'm going to do them tomorrow to see what happens).
So today I took the checkpoint tests. They each give ten XP, and consist of fifteen questions. The questions are all multiple choice, although some are kind of tricky. I heard something about a review, but since I got all the questions right on the Spanish checkpoint, I didn't get that. I then tried the English checkpoint quiz, and it was basically the same (but easier because it was all in English) except some of the multiple choice questions were fill in the blank in a sort of text message format: one person asks something that you fill in the blank, and another person has a message with the answer. I have all my golden owls back, now!
My question would be why?
I guess you have the course completed and are just missing the last pentagon?
At least that is what happened for me, although I have the owl in the app. Very weird
My Spanish tree looks like this now, French doesn't. I like it, it has more split up sections, whereas the previous one had like 3 little sections and then like 50 lessons with no checkpoints at the end.
I agree! It's nice to have a visual split up, it'll give my studying a tad bit more structure, I'll feel more motivated to see progress in each section.
That was a worthless exercise. I took the test, and I passed. But I have no idea what questions I got right or wrong. Maybe I got them all, right, but I don’t know, so that was pointless.
I am fairly positive that it'll tell you the ones you got wrong (other people have said so, and have also said something about a review of the incorrect questions) so congratulations, you got them all right!
I just tested out of English from Spanish and got one question wrong on purpose. Unless you click the review button you will not know if you got something wrong.
Oh I see! That must be what happened with me too. I was wondering why some people said they were able to review their answers and I wasn't.
At the end of the test it has a 'Review Test" button which will let you see which questions you got right or wrong and what the correct answers are.
On my laptop, there is a review button, but not on my android phone, which is where I do most of my lessons.
Can someone post a screenshot? I'm curious to see this. My trees are all the same.
Yes, I did my checkpoint and it was a general test of everything covered in the tree. One oddity with it is that there is no progress bar to tell you how long the test is, so you don't really know if you are just beginning, halfway through, almost finished, etc. But it turned out not to be too long.
That's good! I was actually planning to go back and fill out my English/French tree again, since getting the new one reset a lot of my crowns, so I'm glad I have the test out feature.
Huh. You have it for French? I have it for Spanish, but not for French. Weird. I really wish I had it for French, I still have Tree 2.0 (the old one, with 76ish skills), and I'm mostly passed the level for Duolingo, but with something I'd be more motivated to keep it up.
Ok, the Spanish and the French learners get a redesign in the tree, but German learners don't? 7 million people left in the dust... There's still no change to the German tree :(
Wait, did your French tree get the redesign? Mine didn't . . . but then, I don't think I've even gotten the latest version of the tree yet.
thanks for flagging this to me as I hadn't spotted these pentagons. I only had only pentagon that wasn't gold and I passed the test now so my owl is back, I don't know how I did it as I've spent a long time on the earlier crowns and not done much work on the complex tenses/moods etc and am very rusty on what felt like pretty limited level of knowledge to start with but it shows that there's good knowledge building in here somewhere. Ta.
Golden owls are Duo's little prize for completing a course. At the bottom of a tree it'll have a golden statue of Duo, usually with a scarf modeled after the flag of the language you're learning.
I don't like how the bottom half of the tree for Spanish has no checkpoints. I wish the tree in the app matched like in the internet browser. There's Part 1-5 and a checkpoint for each online. Did they just not add these yet for the app? It seems very unorganized
