A lot of people think that you need to learn every character separately with no exceptions. Well, that's not quite the case!

While there are a lot of nuances, this video teaches one to remember characters easily and even understand the meaning or pronunciation before looking up characters in the dictionary! Basically start with the most simple characters and start recognizing them in words, they might tell you not only what the word is related to but what it sounds like.

Chinese New Year is going to be in Feburary, it'll be the Year of the Pig. I highly recommend attending a festival if there is going to be one near you, maybe in a Kung Fu/Tai Chi school if it's public or at the local Chinatown. They are quite fun, and a good way to learn culture, everything from fireworks to feeding the lions money. Good time to learn numbers and their cultural meanings too (be sure to avoid the number four when giving money in Chinese New Year festivals, including lion feeding, because it's the number of death! To avoid negativity, give in twos, threes, eights, or nines, and give in sixes to businesses, if you give money at all.)
