When should you use "enviar," when should you use "mandar," and when are they interchangeable?

In Portuguese we have the same words and I use them interchangeably. The only difference I see is that "mandar" sounds more informal than "enviar'.

"mandar" is to ask for something, to order, (think of "demand" in English). It also means to send. It has several meanings.

"enviar" is to send.

For example: You can "mandar" a signal, but you can not "enviar" a signal.

I made a mistake, "enviar" can also be used to send a signal. I like Ed.Guimaraes explanation, "mandar" sounds more informal. I'll remember it that way. Thanks!
