What does the sentence below mean? I am confused with how the first four words of the sentence are used.

'Gör det det kommer Socialdemokraterna stå utanför regeringsmakten under flera mandatperioder.'

Sometimes a construction like Gör det at the beginning of the sentence is used to mean Om det gör, so the sentence could be rewritten as:

Om det gör det kommer Socialdemokraterna stå utanför regeringsmakten under flera mandatperioder.

Now, both det refer to the previous sentence in the article. The first det is for ett sådant samarbete, the second one together with gör is for kommer att normaliseras. Therefore, one can rewrite the sentence as:

Om ett sådant samarbete kommer att normaliseras kommer Socialdemokraterna stå utanför regeringsmakten under flera mandatperioder.

Still on the issue of 'det', how does one literally translate 'Vad blir det politik?' I understand it can mean 'What becomes of policy?' but what is the purpose of the 'det' in this context?

I'm not sure if Vad blir det politik? is correct. Have you seen it somewhere? Maybe you mean Vad blir det för politik? That means What kind of politics will it be? and det has the purpose as it in English.
