Lingot Shop: Could be larger (More to buy = More demand = lingots are a better incentive!)

It would be very nice if the lingot shop had more to offer. There are only three things you can buy currently and the shop seems a bit lacking. I have a few suggestions below for how this shop could be improved.

---> Perks <--- There would be a section for buying cosmetic upgrades for you around that would show up on the Discussion section (right here). These would include frames, animations, text icons (like emojis) and more.

Frames - A cool border around your icon

Animations - Little animations that play across your icon, like fireworks

Text Icons - Small icons you could insert into text while you are making a post (like this one). There might be a chinese text icon that you would get for starting the chinese course, but you could buy a more cool looking one in the lingot shop. There could also be a flame text picture or a lingot even! It would be easy to make a lot of these for only a few lingots each. There might even be packages that come with lots of different text icons!

View Sounds - This sound is played whenever someone clicks a discussion you created.

Lingot Giver Sounds - This sound is played to whoever gives you a lingot when they confirm their generous act!

Background Music - Plays while you are on duolingo.

Correct Answer Sound - Plays a cool sound when you get the answer right.

Mouse Tracks - This would be a small trail that follows your mouse. There would be spackles or rainbows or maybe even little footprints!

More - I am sure that other creative people can expand this list...

---> Themes <--- These are a bit like perks, but they show up to you instead of to others. Basically, themes change the way things look. There could be a night theme with cool dark look or a sun theme with lots of yellow. The hearts on tests might turn black in the dark theme and have little suns on them with the sun theme. The background would also have a cool picture.

These themes might even unlock special cosmetic upgrades while equipped. Below are some of the themes I can think of:

Default - The default texture (how things look now) which everyone has.

Dark - All the textures are darker. Hearts would be black.

Inverted - All the textures are inverted! This would be on the cheep side.

Sun - Lots of yellow and sunny textures

Plus - You can't buy this with lingots, but it is unlocked automatically while you have Duolingo Plus.

Minecraft - Blocky Square textures. Hearts look like Minecraft hearts and the rare zombie or creeper is to be seen in the background, which would be a lot of dirt blocks, like the Minecraft one. Might want to check on copyrights here though!

Fortnite - Not sure how this would look, but the hearts would be a look like a green HP bar. Past that, I don't know because I don't play fortnite. Might want to check copyrights here.

Clash of Clans - Not sure what this would look like, but might want to check copyrights.

Other games - More games could be used, but once again, might want to check copyrights.

Rainbow (or Chromatic) - Lots of rainbow textures.

---> Boxes <--- Boxes would allow you to obtain all of the above items without directly buying them. You could buy a theme box or a cosmetic box. Each selects a random item from the respective list when opened. They would be cheaper than most of the items they grant, but you don't get much control over what your getting. These would have a cool opening animation that changes with themes.

---> Game <--- This is described in detail on another page, which can be found at https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/30625237

I hope these ideas are helpful for improving the website. If you don't like them, you don't have to use them.

Thanks, Lightning_11

Also, other extra courses could be added. Idioms and flirting get very boring, and it would be more to learn!

Originally I though the special themed language levels would be more common, match the complexity of the language section and available for lingot purchase. I love them, but the flirting and proverbs come way too early for the difficulty level. They ought to start off with knock knock jokes. But I don't want to dissuade the creators because I got excited when I saw them. It was a motivator indeed! I would have loved to have seen a flirting levels 1 2 & 3, because I've got a major crush on a mujer de espanol and it sure would be nice to have some simple but silky lines on the ready. Exactly, new lessons would be awesome. I don't need any moving animations and things like that, but I would love to have more content to learn. It doesn't even have to be the same type of lessons... Poems, short stories, cultural information, cooking recipes at the appropriate level would be absolutely awesome.

Also not all languages have flirting or idioms? Unless I've just not learnt enough Chinese yet?!

Additional optional courses would be a great usage for lingots. My personal suggestions would be things like celebrations (how to say Happy Birthday, names of key festivals for that language), jokes as previously suggested or culture (words related to that country).

I know stories are also available for some languages, but maybe short stories or poems could be bought for other languages?

One more suggestion, if I may: A word of the day which you can unlock with 1 or two lingots. Maybe even, every season, a word or sentence related to the holiday you're in. AP4418

Oh, yes! That would be quite interesting, and maybe the word could be translated into all the language you are learning. There could be a word bank, and a lesson that trains you to remember the words.

Oh my gosh, I think I overdid it. That might glitch out.

I agree with this, but keep in mind, this is a language learning site. The point of Lingots isn't really to buy stuff with. Mostly, I think it's used as a motivator to do more lessons and make better posts on discussions. I do understand where you're coming from, and I like your ideas, but don't be disappointed if more stuff doesn't come in for a while, because they're probably going to be spending more time on the site itself.

Thanks,

At some point you do have to ask, why even have lingots if they're not used for anything? If it's just a number to measure time invested, the streak counter already does that.

(I would find extra bonus lessons more motivating than cosmetic upgrades, for the same reason.)

I agree with srrrh. Lingots serve no uses other than

1)Timed practice(1 time offer)
2)Bonus skills(1 time offer)
3)Streak freezes(unlimited offers. Only 1 at a time)
4)Awarding post/comment with Lingot

I only have the option to buy streak freezes and give a Lingot to a post/comment. I have 60 Lingots at the moment and they serve no use

January 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Ampharos64

Well, those aims can easily be combined, right? The store could have more bonus skills, more stories. Maybe you could buy an 'About Me' profile section that other users can also see, if you set it to allow them to. It could help you fill it out in your TL, for more extended writing practice, with info about media you like, pets, hobbies, and so on. There could be tests to take that had somewhat longer questions, like in a real exam at school. Lingots could be a reward for learning that unlock more opportunities to learn - win/win!

Though aesthetic options can be motivating, too. Themes would be nice.

Those ideas are not attractive to me but I do agree I wish there was stuff to spend it on. I have 80 at the moment and nothing to get. I wish you could get buy up lessons like: jokes, social faux paus, videos, and purchase live chats with a native speaker. Starting speaker time would be 10 mins ( Salut, Bonjour etc. ) up to 2 hours of chat time so that your spending aligned with how far you have made it in your lessons. I think chat videos would be hugely rewarding!

January 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Cecil_Savid

A very good idea. Live chats would be useful, but they would be a nightmare to organise enough people to do it. When they first came out the waiting list could be days long. Also, there would be trouble with time zones.

I would love it if we could buy extra lessons with our lingots. Maybe the stories should have been bought with lingots. I have 537 lingots. I am not much of a wagerer and I hate timed practice so I seldom spend any. At this point, really ANYTHING to buy would be good but I would rather it be something more to learn.

January 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Orion_Speaks

I agree. I mentioned this in another post a while ago and i too got a lot of down votes for what i thought would enhance the user experience. Guess some people dont like improvements, especially when they don't replace anything, only add to already existing features and functions.

January 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/KnoxieDerWolf

I agree! I would be much more inclined to learn if there was a reward to work towards. Like most people have said, while lingots are rewarded, there's no credible feeling of success that is gained by getting them. It just becomes another number that goes up.

I like your idea of themes a lot, particularly the ability to buy a night theme. A lot of people would want that, I included, and I assume it will greatly boost the interaction of learners here.

January 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Cecil_Savid

The shop definitely needs to be expanded. I currently have 50 lingots and have to spend 105 more for my next award. However, there is nothing to spend them on. Giving lingots to people does not count as spending them, so I cannot do anything with my lingots except wager them or maybe waste them by not practicing for a day.

As it stands, giving lingots is a nice gesture, akin to 'liking' the post. That's fine, but if there were more things you could buy with lingots, the gesture would be a lot more meaningful.

I am about to blow some minds (No, I'm not, I just watch a few musicals today):

Is that something different to "timed practice"?

January 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Lightning_11

Yes, but maybe there would be a way to do a lesson timed also. You could buy it and turn it on and off. You would get 10 XP for a timed lesson +1 per question you got right. If the timer catches up to you before the end of the lesson, you would have to stop. Kind of like timed practice, but for lessons.

January 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Cecil_Savid

That would be good. It could be more of a challenge than the practises as you wouldn't have seen some of the words before.

I loved the timed language lessons on mindsnacks ... those were hugely popular language learning apps. I still can't understand how the people responsible stopped supporting them. February 20, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Naomi153048

Look. If you didn't practice, then you'd end up buying a streak freeze. Then you'd be spending lingots. That's pretty much all I can do with lingots. These are the things you can get with lingots.

  1. Streak Freeze
  2. Double or Nothing
  3. Timed Practice
  4. Idioms & Flirting

All Double or Nothing does is give you even MORE lingots, and I already have Idoms & Proverbs and Timed Practice. So all that's left is this.

  1. Streak Freeze

But I always have time to practice. So that's not too good either, and if I did practice, like I (almost) always do, then I'd just get EVEN MORE lingots, and therefore, it's not a very good motivator, because the only way for me to spend them now is to not practice. I'm holding onto 550 useless lingots right this moment!

I don't think they'd go for that, because that would give lingots a real monetary value, which is a huge can of worms potentially.

Also like, 100 lingots are just way too easy to earn, you could get months of free access quite easily, which would presumably hurt Duo's business model.

i agree with this.... please, duolingo, te suplico... for the love of God and all things holy give me a reason to spend my lingots. I have almost 700 (which is NOTHING when you look at other's who have... uh... 100 thousand or so. A lot of the older learners on this site have nothing to spend with them). So since we are not doing minecraft (god please no), i say we stray away from cosmetics and work towards more and more bonus lessons. We actually lost one of the three bonus lessons a year or so ago (holiday / christmas). I'd love to complete so much more.

I've been thinking this for a long time too! Lingots have so much potential to be a super good little motivator, but it seems like the opportunity is going to waste. This website could definitely benefit from making Lingots a stronger tool to get people more invested in a fun way.

The best use of for Lingots is to give them away in the Discussion tab, thus encouraging more communication - which is what DuoLingo is all about

I guess, but that's not really spending them... They are still in circulation, I am thinking to get them OUT of circulation through purchases to make them more valuable.

I think the main purpose of Lingots is to encourage people to participate in discussions. There is a badge for spending 200 or more Lingots, but the only way you can spend that many is by giving them away in discussions. I think the creators of DuoLingo are probably mostly motivate by a desire to encourage communication among all the peoples of the world. This discussion forum is part of that, and whenever you award somebody some Lingots you are showing your appreciation and encouraging then to continue participating in the discussions.

Duo lingo seems like it has so much to offer except for the fact that there aren't very many useful things that look appealing to buy in the shop.

Like I why would I wanna spend lingots on extra practice when I can already have one for free in the strengthen skills section.

Duo should add more appealing stuff in shops like buying a way to level up in certain subjects, or buy an opportunity to write a book or podcast for duo, you know get something creative and appealing.

Does anyone else feel the same?

Completely agree and I've been thinking this for quite some time! It's a shame that the currency sits unused, it makes me a bit sad. I saw one person suggesting a RPG-like take on spending lingots...I can't remember their suggestions I just remember it being pretty fantastical and interesting. Creating something of a minigame inside of the lingots and store could really push people to learn more and more languages! Maybe using the Lingots as a currency to play language based minigames, or some kind of concept like that?

Sounds great, but we need to make sure that language is always at the center, not minigames. A language based minigame would be great for this purpose... but do you have any ideas for what that might be like?

Even a good old fashioned wordsearch might be something? That's the kind of activity teachers used to give us at school. A crossword would be a lot better, but perhaps take more work to implement.

Timed fill-in-the-blanks? See how many correct verb conjugations you can select in a time limit?

Interactive stories? Either simple ones where you just have to select the correct response for the story to continue, or more complex ones that were like basic text adventures - maybe you'd have to type the direction you wanted to go next, type to use items and look at things etc. I think if it were kept simple, with only a few commands and basic description for the locations (eg. 'You are on a road in the forest. Go left or right'?'), and didn't have many branching paths, it might be possible. Like Alexa's Magic Door game, if you know it.

Or maybe a maze game, where you type in directions to navigate streets to a location you've been asked to reach. It could be timed, too.

Yes, but not a text adventure... I think that a book adventure would be better. That is a lot like a text adventure, except you get to chose from a list of actions instead of guessing and the computer telling you it doesn't know what "throw troll out window" means.

It would be cool if the game has a RPG story option mode and you use your gems/lingots to buy gear like clothes, weapons, magic spells, etc. Obviously, the more you practice the better you can afford gear. I would think that to avoid peopel instantly buying all the top gear off the bat due to having an over-abundance of gems/lingots, the game will only accept the amount of gems/lingots gained since joining up, not what is in your bank total.

In the game, you then battle monsters by typing in word translations. do it wrong, you get hit by the monster and lose health. Boss fights require perfect spelling and can include grammar questions. Block a monster's attack by hitting their slightly incorrect words as they fly to your character.

I guess i sometimes wonder if Duolingo has no game developers in their team.

January 16, 2019

That might be good, but we need to keep language at the front!! Otherwise we lose the point of the site. Would gear be only cosmetic? Would there be a multiplayer mode?

That'd be cool if we could buy Duolingo Plus with lingots.

EX: 500 lingots for 1 month Duo Plus 1000 lingots for 2 months Duo Plus

etc etc

Obviously, they can set the lingots to membership ratio to whatever they want :P.

I definitely agree. More items would give lingot hoarding more worth it. At the stage, there's not much to buy, so you just have lingots lying around.
