What is the meaning of "encore" here?
I read a news talking about the explosion happened at Trévise. It said:
"Les pompiers devraient poursuivre plusieurs jours encore leur long travail de déblaiement."
I am not sure what is the meaning of "encore" here? Should it be translated as "Firefighters should continue several days more for their long clearing work"? or "Firefighters should still continue their long clearing work for several days."? or something else?
The news is from here: https://fr.euronews.com/2019/01/13/explosion-a-paris-une-quatrieme-victime
(Native French speaker here.) It means that the firemen will probably have to continue working for several days in addition to all they have already done. The emphasis brought by encore is on the prolonged duration.
I would translate it this way:
"Firefighters will have to keep going with their long clearing work for even more days".
If I'm correct, in this case "encore" takes the meaning of "even". But "several days more" should work as well.
Encore can mean again, still, yet, even, furthermore depending on the context...
This is an interesting question. I would go with: "The firemen should have to continue their long, clearing job for several days still."
