The Spanish I haven't seen, but for French and Russian the newer editions, compared to the 1980s editions or earlier, have little gimmicky multiple choice questions, etc., in the exercises, rather than sentences. There are dialogues as before, but there appears to be less text per lesson. They are still pretty good, however if you like Assimil.

Do a search on "Assimil" on YouTube and you'll find 2 or 3 comparisons of older and newer Assimil books, but they are not as recent as 2014. For instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLvTEqXqlsI , which says what I've said, but better and with illustrations.

Working through a primer such as you have, and then working through a different primer is (in my opinion) a great thing to do. Also, there used to be a Using Spanish book, which was a continuation of the first book, but it looks like it may no longer be published in English (in French it is called « Perfectionnement Espagnol », http://fr.assimil.com/methodes/perfectionnement-espagnol ). Here's a screenshot from its lesson 6, http://www.lingholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Using-Spanish-Lesson-6-page-27-28-29-30.jpg , to show you its level of difficulty. If you can find a copy w/ recordings, you could try that after finishing the set you have, rather than getting a new beginner set. Just a thought. I haven't tried it.
