I woke this morning to realize that I had forgotten to do my Spanish yesterday! (I did have a streak freeze in place) Duolingo on my iPhone showed me to be at day zero. I fired up my laptop and ran Duolingo for the computer. It showed me to be at day 899 with the Streak Freeze having been used and my progress for yesterday at zero.
I did two lessons on the computer and my day count increased to 900! Yay!
I purchased another streak freeze and then checked on my iPhone. Sure enough it now showed 900 not zero.
I know that streaks are not the be all and end all but have enjoyed seeing the number increase as my Spanish proficiency increased. It is a motivating factor. Thanks Duolingo for having this option and for encouraging me to study diligently.
Being that high up with day streaks I would have definitely freaked out. But congrats on 900!
Thanks. The streak shouldn't be as important as it seems but there it is. I know there have been many days that I would have skipped my lessons if not for the streak. Motivation.
Very good job on your streak! I personally have never reached over one month, so I am very impressed by people who have streaks over 100. Keep up the good work! :)
Thank you. I'm retired. I have few excuses for not doing my minimum of 2 lessons per day. You have an impressive list of languages that you are working on. I don't think I'd be able to keep separation between the languages. I have enough trouble keeping Spanish and my two native languages separate - French and English. I notice a lot of pronunciations slipping easily from one language to another.
I've had one in place since pretty much day 1 and when I needed it - there it was. Amazing.
Are streak freezes used automatically? So basically it's like having 2 days before a streak runs out?
It's exactly like that. They just sit there until they automatically get used, and then you should buy a new one for next time.
nope but you can get the weekend amulet that works only for saturday and sunday :)
NZers need at least two day streak freezes - it takes at least 36 hours to get to Europe - and that doesn't count the fluffing around before (when you cannot do any DL, or travelling to somewhere with internet access after you arrive).
Yeah. That's saved my butt a few times. Going on a plane ride and other things like that.
Kudos for your streak and strategy.
I expect my streak to be frozen at 0 for 6 months but in my situation I am learning more than ever. When you are totally immersed there is little time or energy left for lessons as words and sentences learned in conversations are more important. Duolingo was good resource to prepare me.
BTW, a post about a streak freeze being high up in the Popular list is a thing to behold.
Oh how lucky for you. Perhaps one day that will be me. My lady friend and I are headed to Mexico next month for a short holiday. It will be my first opportunity to use my Spanish out in the real world. It will be interesting no doubt. As for the streak freeze - it seems so often that we hear of individuals whose attempt at using a streak freeze was unsuccessful that we all feel better to hear that it can work.
That's what I find. I also like the fast rate at which my Lingot stash increases due to the long streak. lol
Oh I agree the streak is very important to me. It forces me to come back day after day
Thank you all for your interesting comments! What a wonderful community we have here in Duolingo.
WOW! that is GREAT! Good luck as you surge toward 1000! I had 277 days; did not have any lucky trying to restore after not advancing through my lesson before closing. The next day, when I saw the goose egg, I freaked but got back on my horse. Back to 163 days. In the end, its all about the journey. Arrivederci!
You are so right. The journey is the thing for sure. My condolences on the loss of your streak. I felt the same when I saw that big zero. Keep up the good work and your great attitude.
I wonder whether a new thing could be introduced: the right to repair a day's break retrospectively, provided that you patch it up within 24 hours (say). Of course Baroldthe1 has seemed to do this without such a patch but perhaps you were lucky.
