My college professor

Used to call English "That Bastard Language" because he said it was derived from many other languages. For instance there are some words taken from the Spanish, the French, the Italian, and some from Latin... etc... etc...

Just a memory that ran through my tired brain tonight.

There are very few languages that are not ‘bastard’ languages. Most have evolved over the years and show many signs of influence from external influences.

This is why English is so rich and expressive. Practically any English word has a gowpenful of synonyms. Yet English remains English; it has not changed into any of the languages it has borrowed from, so clearly this borrowing has done it no harm. I cannot understand how anyone can take pride in the purity of a language, as purity is an absolute limitation on expression, and expression is the sole purpose of language in general.

What was he a professor of, out of interest? Hopefully not English...

English is quite the chimera of languages and cultures, huh? The history is very fascinating! Make me proud to speak it :)
