Course change

I have just got back to my Spanish, after a break, to find it all changed. Although it hasn't taken me back to basics it was going over things I had learned ages ago....not a bad idea, I thought, will be good practice, so I started going through the levels in different subjects. But after going through several it took me right back to 0/20 and started asking me all the same things again....very frustrating. At least with the old system you progressed onto different words/subjects. Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong?

No, you're not doing something wrong. Duolingo just loves updating / running A/B tests for courses, and the big Spanish course update is one of those updates. It happened to everyone, and we've all had to earn-back all our XP and golden owls. Think of it as good review, and if you already know a skill, that's the proper time to use the test-out feature.

Are you sure that you lost XP? I understand losing crowns as they want you to take the additional lessons for the skills they updated. But I thought the XP (which are basically meaningless) weren't touched.

You can test out of a Crown level (if you think you know the material) by doing a single test to complete all 20 lessons in that skill.
