Many people on the forums ask "I finished the tree - now what do I do next?"

Maybe when you finish a tree, Duolingo could add a message that says something like:

"Congratulations, you have done all of the lessons in our course! To continue your learning you could:

  • take everything to 5 crowns
  • do the reverse course
  • learn another language from your completed course (laddering)
  • or pursue your learning outside of Duolingo."

They already have a system like this. On PC (and as far as I know, mobile), they have a "golden owl" at the end. Most people don't notice it, but if you click on it, it will give you a message (somewhat like yours).

First of all, you're awesome! You've completed the German skill tree! Second of all, we'd like to take this time to thank you sincerely for your lengthy participation on Duolingo. So in honor of you, here is a very special trophy in which to show our gratitude. (with a signature of "Duolingo Staff" written at the end).

Hope this will help any confusion. I like the idea of adding different ways to learn things, I think this could really help. This is certainly something to be implemented in the future. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Gwaugle

Yes, I know about that message. Many people seem not to notice it, though.

And my point is answering the "What do I do next" question that many people ask - repeatedly, on the forums - after they get to that point.

IMHO, Duolingo should expend to much-much more, offering additional language tools, like reading texts with translations, songs, MTV clips with subtitles, culture facts, IDIOMS, PODCASTS (started for some reason only for Spanish), etc. The sky is the limit. People will simply not leave the site. It will be a whole new level, a comprehensive "umbrella" platform with endless training.

music would be awesome! zenlanguage has some and I go there every now and then and it's really great but if Duo had it that would be even better. It's nice having all the tools in one place. Also yeah videos with the option to have have subtitles it one, both or neither language would be a great help for ear training.

English and Spanish are the two most commonly learned languages on Duolingo, that's probably why they started with Spanish.

Good idea. Would guide people on their learning after finishing tree, and hopefully avoid confusion.

My question is why the Golden Owl is given out before the 5th level is reached.

Owl is for "finishing" - aka getting to the last level.

I feel like they should have two different ones, though, or maybe your owl gets a crown or something when you've gotten all the crowns.

Finishing? I agree, reaching the last level. The last level is 5 not 1

The Crown levels are a relatively recent addition. Higher Crown levels don't necessarily mean new material, just more practice with the same material. By completing every Skill to Crown 1 you have taken all the lessons in the course. Repeating skills to higher Crown levels just gives you more practice.

Because Duolingo wants people to choose their final crown level according to how deep into the language they want to go, but also wants to reward people for persistence through the tree.

Why gold at level 1? What do I get when I finish level 5? Unobtainium Owl?

I am very happy with the system as it is. Finishing the last lesson on level 1 gives you a golden owl, which is a big motivation to finish the course. One can then try and get entire tree golden, which means bringing all the lessons to the level 5. The color coding of the levels also allows you to set your own goal to bring all the lessons e.g. to red, which is level 3.

When you are learning several languages at once you do not necessarily have the motivation to have all of them at the same level. Depends on which language you will be using in the near future.

what I'm planning to do is not complete the final lesson, so I delay getting the golden owl until all of the lessons are level 5. It works I guess :)

I do the same. I know they want people to try not to level 5 every lesson right when they learn it but I guess if we need to re-learn it we could just practice. I think it's personally satisfying to just have a long gold skill tree.

You get a golden owl when you finish the tree to at least crown level 1 in all skills.
