Hi fellow Duolingo students!

So not counting leap years, of which I think there was only 1, I have made the 3-year streak mark! Some things in passing...

Don't be in a hurry! At least when it comes to making study plans. I have heard numerous beginners with earnest intentions of studying for hours each day to pick up their new language at maximum speed! This is just setting yourself up for failure. Especially if this is your first language-learning experience, don't overcommit yourself. Keep your plans light and flexible until you find what works for you.

Make language part of your routine. With Duolingo's bite-size lessons there's little reason to miss a day. I usually suggest doing a lesson before you even get out of bed. First thing in the morning and you've already been exposed to your target language! While on your way to work or school you can listen to music or radio in your target language. When you take a break, whip out your... Duolingo lesson! Many of us use the excuse of not having or making time to study. Make language part of your day and the amount of study you need will be greatly reduced.

Don't be afraid to speak your language! This is a big problem for most adults as we're not accustomed to leaving our comfort zone. Especially if you talk with a native speaker they can sometimes mock your honest attempts to learn. I have found that learning with other students is very helpful in the beginning since they are more understanding of the difficulty you face. So if you are an English speaker and you want to learn Portuguese, then Portuguese-speaking English learners are going to be the most helpful and understanding. Check out other apps for conversations, like HelloTalk and Tandem.

Have fun. The best chance you will have to learn a language is to have fun doing it. If you hate it or it's a perfunctory part of school are you really going to learn as well? Of course not! So enjoy it. Try speaking with others, find some new songs in your new language, make new friends that speak your new language... or anything else that adds to your enjoyment. I love having conversations with people around the world in their own language. I love foreign music. I love translating new songs in various languages. I love helping others learn English. All these things I enjoy and make learning worthwhile to me.

Take care!

"Especially if you talk with a native speaker they can sometimes mock your honest attempts to learn."

An earnest reminder to everyone to be compassionate toward people who are trying to learn your native language and not to mock them. It's so much easier to open up to speaking another language when you aren't worried people will be poking fun at your mistakes!

Hey El_Gusano, congrats on you milestone! You were one of the people I used to like to read the most when I was around more.

Do you happen to be a Discord user? Would you like to be a part of our server? You were suggested by some of our members as a good candidate. We obviously talk and practice languages but we also go a bit far and beyond in discussing several topics.

Drop me a line if you'd be interested.

@El_Gusano: we have this server, for our jolly bunch of people - and we would welcome you here with open hands! We practice languages, but also chit-chat, and do a ton of other funny stuff ;)
If you're willing to give it a go, please make (or if you already have one) post your Discord id#number so that we can add you ;)

All the best and congratulations on your streak! I passed the 1- year-mark... looking forward to the second, but I've already learned more than I've expected! :D

I can affirm Carlos', Mya's and Nuno's words. The server is great and I am sure you will like it here. To avoid trolls who will join uninvitedly, you can give us your Discord Username. (name#56763) . We will invite you on Discord itself :)
Can't wait to see you there

Congratulations on a three year streak. What dedication! I'm hoping to get there someday. I've managed to do my lessons each day since I started Duolingo and am currently on day 191. I'm proud of that because I had surgery a couple of months ago and had my husband bring my computer to the hospital each day so I could maintain my streak! Like you, I make Duolingo (along with a cup of coffee!) my first priority in the morning. If I have time during the day, I'll squeeze in a few more lessons.

Besides HelloTalk and Tandem there is www.Speaky.com. Have you tried it (I have not)?

There also is a chat portal called www.hellolingo.com

(a replacement for the former portals SharedTalk / SharedLingo / LiveMocha - you can even search for previous members).

Once the (text) chat window is established, there is a voice option (I have not tried yet).

Congratulations on the streak and the good advice. Serious language learning requires a long-term commitment, and finding ways to make it fun and interesting for each of us personally is definitely the way to go. Overcoming that fear of talking in a new language is still tough for me, even though I've gotten over that hump a few times before with other languages.

BTW, give some thought to Nuno's and MyaRexa's suggestion.

I had a goal to keep up my streak (when I first started) for a long time (ideally for the first year) but as you can see, I haven't been very successful. Oh well. :) Keep up the good work! In my early 30's, I tried to re-learn my native English language. I started with grammar rules. Surprised on grammar rules I forgot or didn't know. When I decided to learn French, I took the same approach. It is working for me because it's a fun way to learn a language for me.
