Contact: Sophie Lohmann (lohmann2@illinois.edu) or Professor Dolores Albarracín. Please note that we are not affiliated with or endorsed by Duolingo, but we are posting here with Duolingo's permission.

Ok, I’ve signed up. A few things you might want to consider:

The directions seem to be written for the Android app. The iOS app is a little but different. It doesn’t have a Leaderboards in the same way. Also, I’m not sure on either Android (from what I’ve heard) or iOS (from direct experience) that you can see how many XP you have in just one language, rather than all your language courses together.

When it asks how many lessons or crowns you want to complete, the questionnaire equates the two. I’m used to seeing the language being used differently: you earn a crown in a skill, but it takes several lessons in that skill to achieve a crown. To get from crown 0 to crown 1 usually takes 4 lessons.

Thank you very much for your feedback! I have changed the survey to reflect your comment - we are now pointing out that you get one crown for each completed topic, which usually requires several practice sessions. I realize that the ios app and some of the recent android versions unfortunately don't not allow you to view your total XP and I have reworded the questions accordingly.

How many Duolingo crowns do you want to earn in the next 7 days? = How many lessons do you want to complete in the next 7 days? Please review this. It seems to be a mistake.

Has your study been reviewed and approved by the Univ. of Illinois IRB?

Good morning, yes, it has been!

It is approved as #18920 and you can contact the Office for the Protection of Research Subjects (irb@illinois.edu) for additional questions or verification, if you like.

This is very interesting! I had already started the Duolingo French-from-English course (59 crowns), but it’s been in hiatus for a while. Can I still participate in the study?

Hi, thank you for your interest in our study! Yes, you would be very welcome to participate - you don't have to be a complete beginner to participate, and you don't need any recent French experience either.

I would gladly have participated; unfortunately one has to live in the United States. Not every Duolingo-participant lives there. I'm interested in the results of your research study, though. When are you planning to have this study finished? ("more or less indication")

Good luck and lots of fun!

We are glad to hear you are interested in our study! For reasons of GDPR compliance we unfortunately cannot currently recruit anyone from the European Union, so therefore we had to restrict our sample. The study will be complete by May at the latest - I would be happy to post the results here then!

Thank you, Sophie844358. If you post the link by that time I'll certainly read it. How many participants do you still need? If necessary I can post this text in the clubs I'm in.
