I just lost a 177 day streak because I was being lazy. Oh well, I guess I'll have to make a new one. My streak was a motivator that got me on Duolingo everyday. Whether it was to buy a streak freeze or to do a lesson, it reminded me of my go to learn languages. The 7 day wagers have a similar effect and that is what be doing a lot of soon. A month or two ago I would have been sad at the loss, but I have known for awhile now that it is just a number. Our streak doesn't show us how dedicated we are, the amount we go to involve our self in different languages is what counts. In fact I was watching a movie in another language. That is what counts to me the effort I make to be surrounded by different languages. So if you ever loses a high streak here on Duolingo, keep that in mind. It is not the numbers that count, it is the knowledge that we take away.

I'm currently on an 11,329 day life streak. I would be very unhappy to lose it.

Don't mention your age in any form on Duolingo. Dare downvote me and you too do not support Duo's rules.

Practically every other user in this thread ignored this rule, and the thread was at the top of the popular section for days and no-one raised a whisper. So the rule is unevenly applied, to say the least.

I don't think that the streak freeze works if you don't have wifi. I am not 100% though.

Last week I let my streak of 1200 something go. It was because I have to unplug an electric heater to use my computer, due to electrical problems.

Right now I am in a polar vortex and the temperature on my thermometer was -40 the past two mornings. I was thinking that I needed a real flame to keep warm more than the flame on Duolingo.

Yeah, people feel warm and fuzzy about having a big streak, but that is only figurative speech.

Plus, actually knowing the language is what counts.

Today I shut off my electric heater for a little while so I could use my computer and check out Duolingo. It's already getting cold again, so I can't stay long.

Oh yeah, while I'm here, I should tell about a dream I had, which was that I was in Russia. In my dream I was in a store and had some margarine. It had Russian writing on it but I still knew it was margarine. Then someone said something to me in Russian. I replied something which I thought was saying "Yes" or "thank you" in Russian and was thinking in my dream, "I should have studied more Russian on Duolingo." Then it was cold in my dream and I was thinking in my dream, "It is just like Canada here". I don't know why I didn't dream about someplace warm.

What I replied I wasn't sure if it was even Russian after I woke up or what it meant.

Thanks for thoughtful post. Yes, I am trying to rely less on caring about the electronic pat-on-the-back. In some ways, those pats work - and then lets use them. In others, I sometimes forget that its not the number/star/lingot/runkeeperMessage we need, but the actual activity that got that. I was caring so much whether e.g. I remembered to turn on an activity tracking app when I exercise, whether I completed a set number of each language each day and kept a streak etc - the feeling that "it doesn't count unless you track it" - but it is important to remember that the value is in the language learning itself / exercise itself / etc, not the electronic pat. If the electronic pat is helping, great (and head to duome.eu if you want more stats to motivate you, levels and strengths to chase, if its working use it). But I found your post motivating, that it is not just the numbers, it is the doing and learning that is the thing.

True, it is not the streak but the knowledge that you take away that is important. But the streak helps in keeping us motivated and in touch with the language site. But for the streak I might have stopped learning long ago. The streak helps in making language learning a habit and keeping it a habit. We all know from experience that if you discontinue doing something for a few days, it stops becoming a habit. Now I am using my duo streak to help me do my yoga every day. Immediately after the exercise, I do my duo lessons. I started it when my duo streak was 930. So today my exercise streak is 34 by subtracting 930 from my duo streak. The streak now has a "dual" purpose!

I am glad the steak works for you but I could never keep duolingo as a habit because often in the summer i do not have internet. You are right about the habit but mine will have to be something different like read a book in a different language everyday. That way I always can do it and I don't have to be proud of numbers

It is nice to see a post about losing a streak be so positive. There was a time when I too would also be upset but now I purposely lose streaks when they get too high. For me, it isn't about the number, it is about dedication and regardless of if I have a streak of 4 or a streak of 104, my dedication is the same. I am dedicated to learning a language. Some need the steaks and the wagers to keep them motivated and some don't and I think as long as you are learning and having fun without the build up of stress and burn out then it's a good thing, but at the end of that day that little flame is just a number and although that can get reset, the progress we make cannot. Thanks for making a positive post of losing a streak.

https://www.duolingo.com/Fredbassett1

Yep, I lost one that was around 1,300 days recently. I was upset at first, then cross that the 9000 lingots I have are utterly no use as I couldn't use them to buy back the streak and there was no way I was paying for duolingo plus just to get back a number on my screen. So I write the number down in my notebook and started again. Still cross though that lingots can't be used to buy streaks back and days off. That would make me feel there was more point to lingots.

Well, you can use lingots to buy a streak freeze which is the equivalent of one day off. You have to buy it in advance, before you miss a day of study and it will automatically protect your streak for one day of not meeting your goal. Unfortunately it's only for one day and I've read that it doesn't work with 100% reliability. But you can buy it and just let it sit there until and unless you need it.

https://www.duolingo.com/Fredbassett1

Yes, I've always had one of those on, but then had two hugely stressful days together in which doing French was completely forgotten, and 9k lingots proved to be useful for nothing after the event.

https://www.duolingo.com/RayEstonSm

I think the main purpose of lingots is so that you can give them away, thus motivating both yourself and others to participate in these discussions.

I just lost an 88-day streak because after a power outage my PC would not restart. I tried to continue using my cellphone, but that would not access my lesson history. However today (a week later) I tried again to restart my PC and this time it worked! It's great to be back on DuoLingo and I find that I am now even more motivated to keep coming back.

I decided last year to stop buying streak freeze. I have good wifi and no other reason to not do at least one lesson a day. I got to a pretty high number and it was very motivating. But one day I got confused, thought I had done a duo story when I had not. The streak was gone, and with it the pull to do something every day. There were other things that played into this lack of motivation, but since it ended I have not gotten more than a week before I miss a day.

RazuRose, well said! I lost my long streak a while back and was a bit disappointed as a result, but I did not lose the knowledge I'd gained nor did I lose the desire to keep learning. That is, after all, why we are here.
