Facebook ( that interface that I often have a love hate relationship with ) reminded me today of a post I made back in Feb, 2013.

One day I dream of being in a room with many voices, talking in different languages, that they are talking of mind expanding subjects, that affect humanity, to affect our future, to understand our past and present, to talk of the universe, and the infinity of micro-space, and yet to make it relevant and real. To be talking of Inventions or Innovation , ( turning inventions into reality ). This is a dream ..... maybe ... it could be a reality ....... ?

I heard of Duolingo about the middle of that year, in the European summer. And joined Duolingo to enhance my language learning on 15 Oct 2013, as Australia entered its spring.

As we near the day of celebrating love, Valentines Day, I also realize how much I have fallen in love with this community, and not just the worthy tool that it can be in assisting a language learning journey.
Though - in the aspect of language learning, I highly recommend you seek to engage yourself with MANY different resources.

Learning a language is hard. It takes commitment and a willingness to seek many ways to engage yourself, and also reward yourself in this adventure.

Yet again, I return to how inspiring I find so many people here. Who show patience and willingness to show kindness and assistance for others language learning.

Thank you community, each one of you. Including those that are here for their own language learning alone. For you are a key part of the dream, this dream flickering to be a reality.

a room with many voices, talking in different languages, that they are talking of mind expanding subjects,

Happy Valentines day (for the 14th) and for an engaging and fun year ahead of language learning to come.

Very inspiring post and I think your dream could definitely be a reality, and I couldnt agree with you more the Duolingo community is a group of a bunch of great people from many different backgrounds, but we all have a same common interest learning a language, it doesnt matter which language you learn here, for example I am learning Spanish but I have greatly been encouraged from people that are learning totally different languages, Thank you for this post.

Que hermoso este mensaje. I undertand completely this dream and can't get enough of sources like NOVA featuring programs about the universe. As far as diferent sources of learning I also agree. I completed every course Living Language has in Spanish and now I have been practicing with Duolingo every day for a long time. I think the best source overall is to make spanish (or whatever language you are learning) friends. Watching soccer and other Spanish programming is slow going but part of the mix. (Showing my age now) Live Long and Prosper!

heee heeeee from a conversation about a day ago, this was what came to me about language learning.

It is though all steps.
A bit like a dance.
Sometimes you go forwards,
Then take lots of steps back.

Yes it's a journey,
And not an end destination.
Yet a journey unique,
Full of fascination.

Slowly by practice,
Reading and writing.
Not giving up,
Slowly listening and speaking.

You find you have progress,
And memories too,
Of this grand magic journey,
That lets me know of you.

It is not for bells and whistles,
Streaks and fine crowns are but tools
Baubles to dangle,
For goals for fools.

These streaks and fine crowns,
Are good to use with intention,
To learn to wield as tools well,
For motivation and retention.

Play games, and laugh,
Learn with a flourish,
Keep going my friend,
Surtout - bon courage !

However it is also more than the knowledge of learning a language. It is when we share knowledge and science between us as a global community.
When we get to communicate more freely, regardless, and wonderfully from all the different languages that frame our thoughts. To be able to think and share ideas and concepts, creating compassion and community between others that speak other languages.

And to do so with respect, kindness and also brutal and sharp minds questioning concepts.

Thank you nonombre88 !
Qué hermoso es su compromiso y participación en la comunicación. .

Linda, I wonder if the "love" thing might be somewhat divisive. There are so many without it in this community, who understand loneliness and who could never be part of it. I'm all for love and celebrating it, but I am also aware of the feelings of others.

Good point Linda.
And for myself, I am not a keen follower of concepts of Valentines day, and even Mother and Father day.
I am keen to show respect to all members of our families, and also to our community.

edited: though I do not like the commercialization of these as days set aside and used to encourage trade of buying things, rather than choosing to spend time with those that you respect. ... and also ... don't talk to me about my birthday. Just giving you a heads up.

For Valentines day - I would prefer to see it as friends day. Not new partnership day.

Our perceptions of the world do matter. And in that, we can also choose to see things through different ways to the way society, especially marketing society, would seek for us to see it as.

So - instead of trying to do something special ... sometime in the not distant future ( and it does not have to be on the 14th Feb ) for a friend you admire. Not someone you are seeking to be or are romantically entailed with, would be one suggestion I would make.

To tie this back to language learning, and learning other cultures, this is one of the many advantages of promoting a diverse society, where we choose to be able to see difference, and not just allow it - but accept it, for the wealth of variety and fun it also can offer us.

Thank you for raising this issue Linda.

Linda. I'm not talking about valentines day or various cards etc and society and marketing, I'm talking solely about something that could be devisive and hurtful here, in this community. And to be honest, your phrasing or suggestion that I "do a kindness to someone" was a tad condescending, unless of course, you meant this as a generalisation to everyone. I just wanted to make a valid and caring point.

I never intend to talk down to you Linda or appear as condescending.
I apologize if that is how my communications affected you.

I see you as an important and revitalizing influence in this community. Often bringing up points of issue, as even in this case, which I think is good for the community. I see you have a sharp and insightful mind.

I do not see where I suggested to you that you should "do a kindness to someone" , so perhaps that is an interpretation extrapolating on what I communicated ? Again, I apologize for offense.

I also agree that events such as Christmas, New Years and Valentines day, and others also, can be flash points for a segment and an important segment of our world wide community. ( all segments are important to me. )

And that it is good if these issues can be discussed in an appropriate way, while also not straying too far from the prime purpose of Duolingo - being a language learning platform. And yet part of that is also maintaining a healthy community where celebrations and acceptance, respect and consideration are taken into account for the benefit of the diversity of all our community, and where all can feel safe to study and learn another language.

That neither means it is necessary to remove and exclude all cultural and community interactions. Though it does mean, I would hope, that we as a global community show sensitivity towards those where discussing wider issues can have a negative affect upon them. Especially in this example for the point you are making.

I would encourage you to also expand on how this issue

could be divisive and hurtful here.

You matter Linda. And you matter to this community.

And I agree, you are making a valid and caring point.

Linda. You suggested I do something special for a friend, which seemed unnecessary and condescending. However, thank you for your long advisory post but perhaps best to end here as our communication styles tend to clash. Best wishes for the rest of yet another Duo year.

Not a problem Linda.
And thank you for pointing out that you felt I was suggesting that you do something special for a friend.

I am sad to hear you felt this was pointed to gas light yourself. It is certainly not my intention. Nor was it directed as a suggestion specifically towards you, nor to anyone in particular. I mentioned it just as a general suggestion, generally as an idea.
As said before, I consider you have a very sharp mind with some great insights that are of benefit to allow issues to be addressed to consider many different points of understanding and view.

I do also wish you best wishes, especially to you, for the rest of yet another Duo year.

Not that it is, well, a new concept. Just that when I first saw "boa", I thought of a boa constrictor. And images of "The Little Prince" came to mind.

I am also just doing a bit more study into "de boa".
And Portuguese is a romance language, adjectives have two genders (masculine and feminine) and singular and plural, and agree with the noun they are referring to.
Good:

Gender singular plural
masculine bom bons
feminine boa boas

In Portuguese, the noun for an "idea" is feminine noun, so you need to use the feminine adjective.

hmmmm - I wonder further if this may also be why we have the name : "boa constrictor".
For the noun snake in Portuguese is feminine : "a cobra".
She is a good constrictor : "Ela é uma boa constritora"

nb : please correct my Portuguese if I have this wrong.

I am not studied in the great arts and knowledge of understanding of philology.
Really in many ways - I am a tourist fascinated by history.

Looks at the name "lindakanga", thinks it's the Username "dreams_on_fire", but it's not. Either way, impressed

You go all the way and never lose hope on that dream! Also, happy Valentine's day to you as well! ¡Feliz día de San Valentín tambíen!

Like you, I have a dream - ser piloto. Sometimes, there are days where I lose hope, as you know being a pilot is a pretty tough job, and a little stressful; so many lives in your hands, with terrorists and bad weather and, like that Lion Air crash near Indonesia in October last year, it could be the plane with the problem at times (though in that crash it was the fact that Boeing didn't warn Lion Air of their new 737 max systems in the cockpit...I'm not going to get too technical here..it's a learning site) But things happen, and I sometimes wonder if I should just give up and call it a day.

BUT NOPE! Not me! Never give up! Learn from your mistakes and keep on trying! I hope that one day you will make your dream a reality, and really learn languages and dwell on them. Thanks for the inspiring post, and good luck!

Especially the issue about how the airline industry conduct investigations into disasters. To find and identify contributing factors so as to be effective to assist in preventing further issues along the lines that contributed to this one. Not conducted as a witch hunt or coverup.

It is complex to maintain this culture, this admirable culture.

And yes - please don't give up ! As you say :

Learn from your mistakes and keep on trying!

Wishing you, DeltaDabber, also all the best, and looking forward to touching base next week.

I made this

Rising tides crashing sky

When you are as low as a tide you start to rising high up to the sky and when you are as high as the sky you start to crash you will be sad but when you are happy you start to raised to the point you think it can’t get any better than you are up past the sky and you start to get sad

And then you start to crash down to the earth so don’t worry about it you will get back up to the sky.

Congratulations on reaching level 3 in Japanese. I have recently climbed up to level 6.

What other resources, apart from the course in Duolingo have you found useful in your progress ?
Any Tiny card decks ?
Other resources such as Memrise ?
Internet sites that describe grammar, or good dictionaries or grammar books ?

It is good to see you learning a language.

Hi lindakanga, I discovered Duolingo last week and also found Tofugu. It has been excellent for learning Hiragana and Katakana both of which I have learned in that time using their method. They also have written several interesting articles about the Japanese language

I have also started a free trial of Wanikani to learn Kanji. I have no particular need for it but it is a challenge. It seems to work well with duolingo for me.

My son has a Brazillian fiancee so I decided to try to learn some Portuguese this week and have restarted German of which I have a limited knowledge.
