Sudden switch to a much shorter tree? (Not cool!)

Only this morning I finished skill 136 of the 156-skill French tree. Now I am suddenly looking at a 76-skill tree with 26 skills completed. No warning or explanation given. Is my profile corrupted due to a bug? Has tree 12 been chopped down for good and replaced? Perhaps some mod knows what is going on and would be kind enough to shed some light on the situation?

To add insult to injury, the page asked me if I noticed something different... (Your tree has been updated, etc.) My list of French words learned lost around 500 words as well.

EDIT: Deleting my newly-created teaching room restored my old tree. Thank you, everybody.

I registered as a teacher of English for Russian speakers and created a classroom, yes. How on earth could it have impacted my French tree??

People participating in classrooms, whether as students or teachers, for any language, are removed from A/B testing in all languages. Your longer tree was in testing still; since you made the classroom you’ve been moved back to the stable (and shorter) French Tree 2.

If you leave the classroom, you should get your longer French Tree back.

If you need the Russian classroom, you might consider creating a different account with a different email address just for running the classroom.

This will never end and more people will probably get trapped into it.

Some days ago a user had confirmed that he had completely forgotten that he created a classroom YEARS ago and because of this was NEVER upgraded from French tree 2.
Quite sad, if you ask me.

Not too many detail explanations are available for classrooms (besides the FAQ) that this actually is account-related and not classroom related.

Zero warnings on the schools.duolingo.com plattform before you finally register and hit the teacher or student buttons.

Thomas.. Thank you. I was wondering why I was stuck on the old tree (tree 2). So today I deleted my class and was moved to new tree (I think it was 8). Unfortunately I lost most of my progress. I went from 199 crowns down to less than 40. I went from finishing the tree, with about 1/4 of the lessons to level 5, to so few lessons showing any progress at all. I am not complaining... I am actually a bit excited. But I wanted to completely finish tree 2 first, so I created a new class again. Luckily I am back to tree 2, with my crowns back, and all the levels look as they did before. Nothing was lost. So my plan is to get to level 5 in tree 2, then delete my class and start with a new tree!

So this is all new to me (and I've been on Duolingo for a few years)... I don't think I've ever created a classroom; and I just checked and my French tree has 80 skills. Am I correct that this is basically just the whim of Duolingo, and if I want a longer tree, or an A/B tree, it's too bad and I'm S.O.L.?

You probably started your tree before the longer tree was introduced. I understand that they don't automatically switch existing tree users to A/B trees. I read somewhere that, in order to get access to the new tree early, you need to create a new account.

You are on the contributor French tree3 (A/B) which provides 96 skills.

Don't signup your user account as a teacher or student!
You will be switched back to the stable tree2 (78 skills)!!

Strange, because all of the other trees have become much longer.

I never registered as a teacher yet I was rolled back to Tree 8.. I remember however this happened a while back and maybe after a day or so I was reverted back to my 'regular' staff tree. I'm guessing/hoping this will happen again.

Can someone please confirm that I’m not in a classroom. I have only had french tree 2. Same goes for my brother Kingjigo313 and my mother RandomTed.

Your user account and Kingjigo313 have num_classrooms 0.

RandomTed seems to be associated to a classroom because of num_classrooms 1.

Do you and your brother share progress with your mother?
I am not 100% sure if I see this correctly in your extended user profile.

You can check for yourself if you are assigned a student schools.duolingo.com account: https://www.duolingo.com/settings/schools

If the classroom field is empty, you do not share progress.

But if I should put my hands into fire, I would guess that your mother has a teacher account, created a classroom and both your accounts may share progress with her, hence you are part of the schools.duolingo.com environment and be fixed to stable French tree2.

However, for both your accounts I can not say for sure with 100%.

When I click on the link it asks me if I want to join a classroom.

My mom does not remember adding anyone to a class, and she thinks she deleted the classroom she had forgotten setting up.

Everyone in my family is still on french tree 2.

Thank you for your help.

Quote: Everyone in my family is still on french tree 2.

So basically this means all of your three accounts are assigned the same stable tree2 and none is assigned any A/B trees (experiment variables).
