I assume "kertas" here means "a piece of paper", because in English a paper could also mean an article, an essay, etc. If "kertas" means "a peace of paper" or papers ("kertas-kertas") then the English sentence should be revised to read: "They give us 'a piece of paper' ('papers') for the history exam ('to write the history exam').
