Brazilian people love to put that sense of humour in evertyhing, and the movies in the language can be very fun and interesting to watch. This way, you can laugh and have a good time while studying grammar and learning new words at the same time! Isn't it awesome?

I, as a native portuguese speaker and a movie lover, can surely recommend you some great ones so here is my personal favorite list. You can easily find some of the movies on youtube. :)

1- O Auto da Compadecida: this movie shows the adventures of João Grilo and Chicó. The history happens on the northeastern of Brazil, so the characters have a very strong accent. Very good to train your perception of words. Released in 2000.

2- Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho: now this is a very interesting movie. It is about a blind boy who falls in love with a new student of his class, who is also a boy. It's simple and touching and will make you shed some good and old gay tears. Released in 2014.

3- Até que a Sorte nos Separe: totally a comedy movie. I almost laughed my *ss off, LOL. It's about Tino, a broke man who has his life completely changed when he wins the lottery. This movie has some sequences, which are Até que a Sorte nos Separe 2 and 3. Besides that, you can watch the second and the third without watching the first one. My favorite is the 2nd, btw. Released in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

4- Minha Mãe É Uma Peça: my mom and I simply love this one. This is the day-to-day life of a single mother, who is also a Drama Queen. She runs away from home when she finds out her kids think she is "boring". Even though being a comedy movie, it's also very touching. This one also has a second movie as a sequence. Great one to exercise family vocabulary. Released in 2013 and 2016.

5- O Candidato Honesto: João Ernesto is a corrupt politician who receives a curse from his grandmother who just wanted him to be honest and tell the truth. After that, he becomes unable to tell lies. Also very funny and exercises politics vocabulary. By the way, the main character is made by the same actor of "Até que a sorte nos separe", Leandro Hassum. He is a very known comedian and actor. The sequence came out last year too. Released in 2014 and 2018.

So that's it! In fact, our brazilian portuguese's daily speech is often different from grammar books and formal speech. Treating people like a close friend and speaking with easy-to-understand words is our way to become closer and more intimate with them. I hope this helps you to understand some new vocabulary and make you laugh a lot! If you have some free time, please watch one of them. Bye :)

Indeed it is. Read it in English long ago, but the Brazilian Amazon site won't sell me a Portuguese Kindle copy. :(

Outside of that, it is much better to be diplomatically polite to those who show you their home, than to say: "This is a joke? A real home has a swimming pool!" or something similiar to this...

For beginners I recommend Chaves. They speak at a slow medium speed. And from there move to talk Radio on an app. Listening to talm radio will expose you to different accents and how people actually speak. Then yes movies. I can now watch movies with out subtitles and understand fully, but it took some build up starting with Chaves and then Talk Radio. Presently, I listen to talk radio Brasil every morning for an hour and it has helped me the most. Movies I watch at night because it is a sort of passive learning but enjoyable.

O que vocês acham de "Nossa Lar"?

"O Candidato Honesto" it's not so good, but "O Homem do Futuro" is the best brazilian movie, which the main actor is the same from "Tropa de Elite". "E aí, comeu?" is a good movie too, but it depends who is watching (it's +18).
