Is 'saya lagi berdiri' has the same meaning?

Yes, but that sounds so colloquial. "Sedang" is more formal

What does sedang mean exactly? Is it like a constant present action?

Yes it means something that you're currently doing. "Saya sedang makan" - "I'm eating", "saya sedang belajar" - "I'm studying"
