Using flashcards is the best method for learning new individual words.
Writing down words is also very useful for learning the correct spelling.

I put new words in a sentence and learn the sentence. Seems to work better than remembering a word on its own.

Seems like a great idea! What kind of sentences do you use? How many times do you repeat? You use paper or simply the computer to write these sentences down?

A large portion of words are not familiar for me therefore I usually look up the etymology which seems to really help me in a number of cases however it remains quite difficult sometimes. I have tried to write some difficult words over and over again, it seems to help but mostly for a temporary amount of time.

Ciao Jeffrey. I keep a handy notebook. I sometimes look back and think "Wow, I can remember that easily now!" 1. L'atmosfera è accogliente" (for accogliente). 2. E va da sé, il cibo è delizioso (e va da sé - it goes without saying) or 3. Ho sentito la tua risata (risata). Just fairly simple reminders. In bocca al lupo...

  1. Write them down
  2. Make up your own sentences with those new words
  3. Make flashcards

The courses have many repetitions and I find that eventually I learn the words. But you might want to write some down, or use a link like Quizlet where you can review the words or anything you want with flashcards and other exercises.
