hindi typing practise - I am finding this so useful!

Is anyone else finding benefit in using a 'learn how to type hindi script' online tutor? I am using http://indiatyping.com/index.php/typing-tutor/inscript-hindi-typing-tutor and it is really good for learning to find the devnagari letters on the keyboard. It is online, no downloads required.

I came to this because I was not recognising the letters properly when they are presented to me in the form of a word. I would mix up ग and न, and ट and ढ etc. I need to produce the letters to learn not to mix those up. Just writing them down wasn't enough to reduce these errors, so typing them rather than using the wordbank makes a lot of sense for me. I downloaded a Hindi Keyboard and got started. Then I found typing slowed me down a lot, because of the need to find the letters on the keyboard. Very frustrating!

In English I learned touch typing, and suddenly it struck me that learning touch typing in Hindi would have great benefit to my learning the (shape of the) letters. I would also not have to search for where which letter would be on the keyboard.

I imagine that once I know how to type the letters, and I can type my answers smoothly, my spelling skills for Hindi will improve immensely.

I agree! Typing all words on the keyboard helps me a lot, too.

As I found learning a new layout a bit daunting, though, I opted for the phonetic layout. It is almost effortless to learn if one is already familiar with a qwerty keyboard.

To anyone who reads this thread: don't be put off by the fact that the title uses the spelling 'practise'. I myself am American, but i favor the British spelling 'practise' rather than 'practice' because the -se spelling is more fonetic, and i am working hard to promote English spelling reform; 'foneticization', as i call it.

The harmful effects ov a highly irregular orthografy ar very real. English-speaking kids spend way more time than necessary learning to read and write (eating up a good portion of the school budget, hence precious taxpayer dollars!), and many end up functionally illiterate or more-weakly literate than would be desirable. See Handbook of Orthography and Literacy by R. Malatesha Joshi and P. G. Aaron, and the websites of Spelling Society / International English Spelling Congress. So Americans, please do not regard the spelling 'practise' as ugly.
