I asked him out in Spanish, and he said Sí!

So a few weeks ago when I was working, my coworker told he that his friend would be coming in and asked me if I would sit with him and help him order some food because he spoke no English- only Spanish. At first I thought my coworker meant that his English was bad, but no… he really spoke no English.

When I first saw him, I have to admit, I did think that he was kinda cute, but I was mainly worried about my Spanish. My Spanish is ok, but I wasn't sure if I could actually hold up a conversation with him or not, let alone explain everything on a menu to him. But when I saw him, I could barely get out "hola." I can't explain it well, but even without speaking there was something there. I guess some people say love at first sight? I'm not sure if I believe in it, but that's basically what I felt.

I could barely get out "hola" at first and then suddenly we were talking. Nothing fancy just "What's your name?" and "How are you?" Then he suddenly asked me when he could see me again. I tried to tell him that I was busy for most of the week working, but all he said was ok, and he left soon after. I was so upset with myself for not getting the nerve up to ask him for his number.

But the next day he came back and waited for me to finish working, and he asked for my number and we talked more.

I forgot to mention…. Before he left me, he'd said "¡Te cuidado!" or "¡Tenga cuidado!" Not sure which…. More or less along the lines of "take care," which I understood easily. But when he said something that sounded like "Te importa a mi." Something along the lines of "You're important to me" or "You matter to me." I was struck...

We ended up texting each other the whole night. The next day I was at work, he was there too, and my coworker said I should just ask him out. I was nervous and wasn't going to right then and there, but the words just randomly spilled out of me! "¿Quieres ser mi novio?" "Do you want to be my boyfriend?"

After that, all I heard was "Sí."

I'm not quite sure how this will work out since my Spanish isn't that good and he speaks no English, but I think somehow, someway, it will. I just get that feeling... Even if things don't work out, I know for sure that this is going to be something special that I'll never forget. :)

Thanks so much for reading!

In Spanish, exclamations and questions are surrounded by punctuation. It is actually a nice feature, because you know before you start reading a sentence if it is going to be a normal sentence, an exclamation or a question.
The first punctuation mark is 'upside down', so...
¡Lo hice! - I did it!
Hola, ¿cómo se llama? - Hello, what is your name?
Tienes un perro. - You have a dog.
¿Tienes un perro? - Do you have a dog?

Good luck to you! My boyfriend of two years is a native Italian AND Spanish speaker; English was his third language. Although he speaks English amazingly well, some things are just lost in translation and some things have negative connotations that you wouldn't expect. For instance, he thinks me saying "If you say so" is really insulting.... He called me a crybaby once and didn't get why I didn't like that (to him it's like a pet name I guess?) xD So now we've kind of made rules of what not to say so as to not offend one another. Needless to say, the language barrier can be a nuisance. Our relationship is great and I love him to death, but the cultural differences and language issues can be pretty annoying sometimes... But I wouldn't trade it for anything :) So I really mean it when I say good luck, especially when your language barrier is so much bigger! Just hang tight!

https://www.duolingo.com/Anathe99

Thanks so much for your advice! I know that it'll be challenging at times, but one thing I do know is that he's a patient person. He's so patient with my Spanish too because he knows that I'm learning. Somedays I know that the language barrier is a nuisance, but most times if I say "no comprendo" he'll try to explain it in a different way or we'll both just laugh about it. :D

https://www.duolingo.com/puppy7989

I love stories like this. My husband is Sri Lankan - his English is flawless, but the cultural differences can definitely be challenging. Worth it (most of the time), but certainly challenging.

Re "lost in translation" - English is my native language and I find if you say so insulting too. I would never say it. I find it kind of off-hand and dismissive, connotations of If you say so, (but what would you know) : )

Regional I think, or maybe I'm just sensitive :)

PS I wouldn't like "crybaby" either - hard to please, that's me!! A lingot to help you dry your tears :)

That's great. My ex boyfriend was bilingual and I tried to talk in Spanish with him when I could, but he preferred speaking in English. This left me using common phrases rather than actually talking like "Te amo." I'd call him my "bebé". He thought it was adorable when I said "No te preocupes" because, as a non-native speaker, I enunciated it a little too well.

I'm wondering now... How do I find out if the writer is a girl or a boy just by reading his/her text?

I think it's she in this case, but I know I can be wrong in this statement. So, what would y'all say about this?

By the way, it's a really cool love story and I hope you build a beautiful no-end story.

About my curiosity, I explain: I'm a Portuguese native speaker and just so you to know our romanic language, like the others Romantic languages, has adjectives with genders unlike English and that makes me confused sometimes. (Is this sentence well written?)

In this case, I believe there's no way to tell if the writer is male or female just by reading it. Your English is pretty good, just a couple small errors :) for instance, "just to you to know" should be "just so you know". Also, in English they're called Romance or Romantic languages, I think. Lastly, "that's make" should be "that makes". Everything else is pretty much fine, I assumed you were a native English speaker up until the part where you explained your story :)

I thought that Duolingo was the most fun way to learn a language, but now I see it's the second most fun way.

Lols sometimes, but I want to make sure to thank the many people who've read my story too! I've never posted anything online before… So I'm really happy and appreciative of everyone who posted a response. I never expected so many people to read my story. I'm so happy, so I don't mind looking through everything too much. XD
