Any advice?

ENGLISH TRANSLATION DOWN BELOW

Deutsch:

Hallo Leute,

Syntax.

English:

Hey Guys,

I’ve recently been thinking that I should make weekly posts (by that I mean a blog); because I find German a beautiful language and want to help others learn.

But I don’t know which language I should write in - German or English? Also, what should I write about?

I could try and write in German for those who just want to read more German to improve comprehension or maybe a grammar series/some Q&As. Any ideas?

Last time, I made an article titled 'Resources for German Learners' and people seemed to find it helpful. Perhaps I should write more articles like this.

Additionally, I should say that I don’t speak (quite clearly) German fluently.

Thanks for reading and your help/advice is much appreciated,

Syntax.

Although it might be a little too much for you, I think that both ways (like you have done in your post) would be very helpful to both learners of German and English.

Perhaps a different topic each week. Perhaps things that could benefit learners in every day life but that is also interesting to you so that you feel motivated to talk about it.

Thankyou for considering doing this for the community.

It’s the least I could do! And thanks for the advice, I’ll be sure to take that into account as I’ve got more than enough time. My worry is if people will be able to understand it as I know that German can be pretty difficult and non-grammatical German even more so. It’ll all be pretty unstructured but I’ll try my best to write something throughout the week and post it every Sunday. Again, thank you and take this lingot as a sign of my appreciation! :) Sincerely, - Syntax

Good luck with your plans, I look forward to attempting to read them {very much a beginner} and thank you for the lingot.

Willy Brandt famously said: If I’m selling to you, I speak your language. If I’m buying, dann müssen Sie Deutsch sprechen!

i understand where you're coming from in that answering a question is a great opportunity to teach and practice, but i think that it would be more useful to answer in english as you'd be understandable to more readers. however, questions in german should be encouraged.

i would also suggest adding examples in german and perhaps even going beyond the original scope of the question when answering. so, if someone asked: "what is the case here", rather than just answering nominative/accusative/dative, i'd also add a couple more examples and perhaps even show how the same word or words are declined in other situations.

Thank you for your comments. When I say ‘weekly posts’ I do mean more of a blog rather than answering questions (which I do when I can), generally responding in the given language. I should have specified that but I will take onboard your tips for the next time I answer queries. Many thanks and here is a lingot for your time! Sincerely, - Syntax.

i would love to read your blog entries. my personal preference would be for those to have a good mix of both. i don't mean a complete translation as the above nor a mashup of words. imagine for example a story where the narrator uses english but the characters use german. hope that makes sense and i look forward to reading whatever you come up with.

Thank you yet again for these insightful comments. In fairness, I hadn’t thought of writing a combination of the two in one and now am debating if I should. I guess what I’m trying to do is what I wanted for myself when I began; where I could just read entirely in German to improve my own understanding. I wish there was a way to run a poll on here for people to vote between these options. I hope that whatever I write though, does appeal to you and the rest of the Duo community. Thanks again!

Thank you but I’m still slightly undecided: do you think I should do an exact translation of both or attempt to mix the two in one? On and here’s a lingot.

Personally, I think if you were to use your skills in answering the hundreds of questions that come up in the lesson-related forum posts, that would be amazing! While doing lessons, I see so many people asking the same, unanswered questions about grammar, word order etc.

But thank you however you choose to contribute. PS, I appreciated you posting in both German and English ... ;-)

Thank you for the comments! :) I always try to answer when possible but this is just a little side project for me to try and stay motivated/committed whilst also potentially benefitting others. Many people seem to approve of the whole translation so maybe I should dedicate some time to that. I’m not so skilled in German (you’re probably better than I am!) but I certainly will try my best with regards to questions and maybe answer some repetitive ones as part of this ‘blog’. Again, thank you and here’s a lingot for all the learning you’ve done, much more of an impressive streak than mine! Sincerely, - Syntax.

Thank you for the Lingot and encouragement. I'm returning your Lingot: it looks like Duo is developing the idea of using Lingots to test out of lessons, and other features in the app, so I wouldn't want you to miss out :)

My gratitudes, but honestly, I have more than enough and anyone who’s willing to spend time and respond deserves something, (I’m stubborn, I know xD). Thank you again.

Dessert-Rose did something similar to what you seem to be talking about. Here's the post, and it seemed to be well-liked as well. I always personally enjoy these types of posts. Just like HimbeereMaus' post, I would also support both languages. Thanks for your support, and I look forward to more German resources from you.

Thanks,

Gwaugle

Thank you very much for the link and advice, hopefully you’ll enjoy the posts I make too (if I ever get to that stage)! And yes, I’m becoming partial to the idea of writing in both languages although prepare for a few mistakes xD. I guess it’ll be fun for those fluent in German to seek them all out.

In terms of what to write about, from the comments people have made I’ll probably write about day-to-day life and perhaps some grammar at points. Again, thank you, and I believe kindness deserves to be rewarded so take this lingot! :) Sincerely, - Syntax.
