Why learn Romanian?
I am learning Romanian to learn more about the culture of Romania and to complete a personal goal of mine: learn at least the basics of the 5 main Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and Romanian). Romanian is kinda the”forgotten one” of the 5 so I want to know more about it and I am almost fluent in Spanish so it helps a little. What about you? What are you motivations and goals for learning Romanian?
I want to visit Romania one day. Their architechure is amazing and I honestly love everything about it, I am aware of the issues but I love the country as is. :)
I think most every country on the planet has some issues. I would love to visit Romania, too. It seems to be a very versatile country, offering something for everyone. As for the original question, I am learning Romanian because it makes me happy :) The language is beautiful and it's rewarding to notice I'm making progress all the time. I probably won't ever reach complete fluency, but it's ok, learning a new language independently as an adult is quite an achievement in and of itself. Enjoy the journey, not just the destination! (a bit of a cliché, but I find it suits my situation quite accurately)
I did the Romanian tree a good while back, mostly like you said, to complete the basics of the main Romance languages.
It was interesting to see what elements it shared with the other RLs and what differences set it apart.
The tree was quick and easy to complete, but I doubt I really "learned" anything in that I can't say a thing in Romanian today, but I'm sure I've retained a passive ability to parse basic text.
Somewhere down the road, I'll redo the tree...
btw, if you're "almost fluent" in Spanish, you might find it fun and challenging to learn the remaining Duo RL—Catalan—through Spanish.
Catalan is another "forgotten" romance language... and as for Romanian, I want to be able to understand Dragostea din tei :)
Just kidding. It's a pretty neat language!
One of the most known meme songs in the world. Though the real song is amazing!
Annnnnd I know someone that is Romanian but I have always loved Romania even before meeting them. So yeah.
Because some customers of mine are Romanians. They will be happy to learn their own language from me. I' m sure. Don't you? :-) ;-)
You got that right! I had a customer once with a Russian sounding name that upon finding out I was Romanian started speaking Romanian to me. Apparently he had worked in Romania in the past. Imagine my shock! I was usually the one talking to people in their own language. so that was a nice surprise for a change. With that attitude you are going to gain some VERY faithful customers, Daniele. (wink)
For the amusement and for the joy of discovery! I learn Romanian mainly to amuse my Romanian friend. But I also want to learn it because I like to discover another Romance language. So far I've been keen to learn about the postpositional articles and about the case system, which is not preserved in other Romance languages any more.
I'd love to improve my Romanian as I live here (Bucharest) and my wife in Romanian ;) This language is completely beautiful and sounds very good. As I want to continue living here it would be primordial to know it better.
My mom "adopted" two girls from Moldavia a few years back. We've been down there twice to visit them, and I met some amazing people I'm so sad I cannot talk to without a translator. I managed to get to know them a little through a very basic Romanian knowledge I had from a book, and figured it was time I picked it up again before the chance to go back presents itself
