"Das Mädchen mag jedes Tier."

Why "The girl likes every pet" is not accepted, but the hover translation says "Tier" can be translated as "pet"?

  • Tier = animal

  • Haustier = pet

I learned from my German teacher (a native speaker from Hessen) that sometimes Haustier is just shortened to Tier. Also interesting to note that Haustier can be used to describe livestock.

is "the girl likes all animals" too loose translation then? :(

all is alles in german. jeder is every/any/anything

I did the same "mistake". The sentence "the girl likes every animal" doesn't sound like normal English... Probably correct, but nobody would ever say that.

It's saying the same thing but the proper translation for "The girl likes all animals" should be: "Das Mädchen mag alle Tiere." "Tiere" is the plural form and should be used in conjunction with the word "alle".

It's a correct translation of the meaning (semantics). The site seems to want a word-for-word translation at the moment, though. We'll see if they widen the accepted answers to include that translation in the future.

why is it "jedes" and not "jede"?

April 9, 2013

It's "jedes" because "Tier" is neuter.
