I think my choice of "The mother is caring for her children" or "A/the mother cares for her children" should be accepted here. But I don't know if there may be a nuance of difference which may be essential, like "...taking care of..." implies a more active immediate role in the nature of activity, whereas ""...cares for..." and "...caring for..." imply a more general and non-immediate role not linked to concrete activity within a given time interval. I'll be happy for constructive feedback.
