Why is "Helaas, de gletsjers verdwijnen" marked as wrong?

I am not a mod (IANAM?)

But to me that sounds fine & i would report it.

One could also say: De gletsjers verdwijnen helaas.

Beide vertalingen Helaas, de gletsjers verdwijnen en De gletsjers verdwijnen helaas zijn goed Nederlands, en zouden goed gerekend moeten worden!

The correct use of the comma is part of the evaluation. Click here for the details (in Dutch).

It's problematic, because Duolingo does not recognize comma use. So if we accepted "Helaas, de gletsjers verdwijnen", it would automatically accept the "Helaas de gletsjers verdwijnen", which reinforces a common word order mistake (lack of inversion) that many learners struggle with.

What about using the continuos "helaas zijn de gletsjers aan het verdwijnen"? Is it plain wrong or just sounds funny?

That's perfect Dutch! That is probably what most Dutchmen would say, although it depends a bit on the context of the conversation.
