First GOLDEN OWL!
I just wanted to share my happiness with all you guys. I feel incredibly happy, because at the end of 80 days streak, I finally managed to complete all the lessons in German to level 5. Though I completed some of the lessons in couple of years ago, I was never ever this much determined to complete it. I had some German lessons when I was 14 or so but I forgot a lot of things, so Duolingo really helped me remember many of these stuff. I took up to 30 minutes everyday to reach the goal, and hopefully I achieved it. I would definitely recommend Duolingo to people who really want to learn a language at least certain patterns. It's time to move on with French!
How have you been with German in Duolingo, does it help you as well? Did anything change in your level of German? I also want to learn from people who use the application to better their German.
Have a nice day!
Well done indeed! The German tree is one of the longest and hardest on Duolingo.
Well done Nshedia. I returned to German as you did after a long absence. It may help you to digest the language more fully if you do the tree from German to English now. Many people advised me to do this and I found a palpable improvement.
Check out the free version of Memrise too. Your comprehension of spoken German will improve greatly and its good fun as well!!
Thanks for the recommendation. I should definitely give it a try to jump up to English to German, so that I can better it. I will check the other websites too. Have a wonderful day!
congratulations and go on, because a language is never known enough ! (nicht einmal unsere Muttersprachen :-))
100% agree! :)
Congratulations on completing your German Tree. Over the years, I tried many language learning methods - CDs, textbooks, tapes, books, etc. Having lived in Germany for three years, I had a working ability of German - eating, drinking, traveling, but I would reach the end of my abilities with shopkeepers, them wondering why I couldn't speak anymore in conversation. Duolingo has helped me immensely in expanding my German and I'm now able to talk in longer everyday conversations, when I have the opportunity to speak with a native speaker.
Have you considered the Reverse Tree, that is learning English from German. I learned additional words as well as new sentences, though it is not necessarily for everyone. Best wishes. :)
Hello, thanks for sharing your experience. It is so good that you finally broke the chains and are able to use it in your everday life. It is also amazing that Duolingo helped you achieve this goal. Hope I will expand my knowledge on German and will be able to talk it as you do. :) About the reverse tree, some of the followers on Duolingo also told me about it, and I am really considering on that as well. Thanks for the recommendations! Best. xx
Wooooo! I feel happy for you! I am on level 11, and i have mastered many skills, and now i am continuing and duolingo is so helpful for me!
Oh thanks for sharing my happiness. It is also awesome that you are on level 11 and still counting. :)
Herzlichen Glückwunsch Nshedia! Gut gemacht! Der deutsche Baum ist sehr schwierig. Du solltest stolz sein!
To answer your questions... I started learning German two years ago. At the time, I was preparing for a business trip to Austria. A friend recommended Duolingo and I thought it might be helpful to learn a little German vocabulary before my business trip. Although the little bit of German I learned was only marginally helpful, I became seriously motivated to start learning a new language using Duolingo. Now, I am pleased to say, that I regularly exchange emails in German with my Austrian colleagues. I am also able to communicate with my colleagues using Skype. Unfortunately, my listening and speaking skills are still weak; however, I am now using other resources to strengthen those skills. -mwbrand1
Danke sehr!
It is really interesting how you have encountered with German language. I totally agree with you. Duolingo is not the only way to learn a language, it is rather a super supporting material when you want to keep your motive & consistency. I also have an Austrian teacher with whom I talk for four hours in a week and I think it is very helpful & motivational for me. Speaking the language with its native speakers is also an amazing chance to improve yourself at that language.
Vielleicht kannst du auch also Websites durchsuchen. :)
Thanks so much! Yes, I guess it is. Thanks for reminding as well. I didn't know that. :)
GOOD JOB! That's wonderful! The hardest part of learning a language is staying on track. That's wonderful! (oh wait, I just said that!)
Congrats, and yes, learn French :)
I'm slowly going through German Duolingo. I studied German as a second foreign language (after English) back then, and going through the Duolingo lessons is a bit weird because I sometimes have no clue about basic grammar stuff but at the same time I remember some obscures rules in the higher levels :D
I also need to go back to my daily listening of the Langsam Gesprochene Nachrichten of DW-TV...
Thanks for the good wishes and for supporting me on French. I can totally understand you, because I learned it as second foreign language in the school as well. Especially the Konjunktiv part was so challenging. I have just searched LGN of DW and it is indeed a very good thing if you want to keep up with German. I am also following some channels on Youtube like Easy German. It is useful & fun at the same time when you hear from people who speak it as their native language.
I really want to become fluent :) Gut gemacht :)
Hi, danke! :)
Thanks so much! I hope you do, but apparently, you have already reached so many language targets. So that's also good. :)
Gratulieren! I still need to finish my German tree. Kinda getting immersed in Japanese right now. Du bist toll!
Thanks! I did the same thing actually. I think structure of Japanese on Duolingo has been built very well. Besides, it is sometimes fun to switch to other languages. :)
Absolutely! I've been studying a lot on Hiragana and Katakana so it's getting easier as I go. I just need to get used to the structure.
Congratulations! I liked stories in German, I quickly completed all of them even though some vocabulary was new to me. Now I more focus on Russian since I am much more proficient in both English and German and Russian seems to be very useful for our job market.
Thank you! I have never looked into the stories. Maybe I should go back there sometime. Beisdes it is good to switch languages, especially if the other ones are more important for your professional life. :)
I am just starting out. Level 4 in the first set , level 3 in the 2nd set. I am really excited to keep at it. great Job!! when I finish German I want to move on to Spanish. Good Luck!!
Nice job, I just finished the owl tree, my next goal is to make all of it gold. I'll try...
Vielen Dank!
I have been quite bad with German although I have the first 8 topics in level 2 and that sounds good. I use German to say Good Morning, Good Day & Good Afternoon. I have looked at how long your streaks are and my 6 Day streak seems pathetic but I only started on the 3rd March
Thanks! No worries at all, I think you did an absolutely amazing job by keeping to maintain your streak. It has only been less than 10 days, so be proud of yourself!
Achieving the German Golden Owl is a marathon. Well done. Now go on to, say, French and then learn German as a French speaker (or vice versa) on DL. I'm doing German as an Italian speaker having managed the Golden Owls for these languages and it is really challenging but excellent practice in both languages. Good luck .
Hello! I hear this "language reversal" from a lot of peeople, and I absolutely agree with you, I am going to give it a chance as well as soon as I am done with French. Thank you so much! :)
I've been working on German here or just over 12 months now. I no previous successful experience of learning language and think its going to take me another year to get where you are at.
Learning a language has something to do with motivations. Sometimes you have it and sometimes you don't. However, even if you lose your motivation, it is good to keep your streak. Spending 2 mins for learning is better than doing nothing. So don't worry. You'll get there sometime, if you are determined, even if it takes 2 or more years to achieve. :)
:) Danke sehr!
I lived in Germany from 1980 to 1986 working for the Canadian military. I learned at least intermediary - but only Badisch and other types of Alemannisch. DUO is helping me a lot with standard German pronunciation and grammar.
Absolutely not. :) Even 2 minutes for a language is important. It is better than not doing anything about them. I am not saying that I spent 30 mins everyday, but I tried. Sometimes I spent like 5-10 mins, but it was also helpful. Besides it is always motivational to keep on with your streak even if it takes 5 mins to achieve. :)
