What's the point of becoming friends and following

I have become friends and am following many people but I wonder what is the point . its not like I can give anyone a thumbs up or post on there page great job. or even yet get into some conversations with some friends who are studying the same language as me.. I'm not sure the point of following and friending people in Duo. Am I missing something?

Back in the days..., you could chat with your friends. There were a lot of good/great interactions that way! For better or worse, that feature got turned off, along with other great features...

I think Duolingo needs to bring back Activity Centers. They were removed right before I joined unless a special thing was done, which I will not reveal. This thing no longer works.

As it is now, you can see how they are doing. One person posted that she prays for her friends here. That irritated one learner in a very big way...

I think it sometimes shows that you appreciate their opinions or help. For some people, it may be simply about competition.

Oh, I left this out. There is an achievement here, and adding people is a part of that. Some teachers may encourage that.

If you mean friends on Duolingo that don't have any way to connect other than by numbers on a board, then why would prayer be an irritation?

Because some people dislike forms of spirituality so much that they want nothing to do with it, not even being prayed for. I pray for people who don't want to be prayed for though, I just don't tell them.

You don't have to do anything to have someone else pray for you...

I pray for people who don't want to be prayed for though, I just don't tell them.

Good idea.

I agree with Kotae. For now, you can only see how much XP they are getting per week/month. You can't really do much else with friends. At least for now.

There's no point. Duo has totally dropped the ball on all the benefits of talking directly to other users learning the same language as yourself.

Another option is (but less accessible) Duolingo Events.

https://events.duolingo.com/ You can check the events page on Duo website , and see if there is one in your area/city.Sometimes there aren't..But if there are you can meet people there.. You can also apply to become a host of your own event/meet-up.

You can talk to other users within Duolingo Clubs available still on some of the android phones...and you can even make friends with them ..yes it is possible if you use your judgement carefully and if they are consistent (which is not always the case)

You do get to know people in the clubs over period of time by how and what they write.. I was fortunate enough to make few good (real ) friends over the Duo clubs and we do communicate quite regularly. But I did put amount of work into it.

Apart from filling up a star on the Achievements page, there really isn't any reason to follow any user on here, since all you see are points that the other user accumulates. There's no way to interact (anymore, apparently, since that function was removed before I got here) other than through competition, which I can get through the app Language clubs. So I'm guessing the answer is no, you're not missing anything.

The only thing we can do with adding people other than that one achievement is watch people's progress and maybe have some kind of exp competition with them in your head. But if that's not something you care for, it's completely pointless. We used to be able to post on each other's profiles which was cool. It feels like there's no reason to have a profile anymore now that we can't.

When you follow a topic you can get notification emails for additional posts to that topic.

So when following users why not receive notifications for any of their posts?

I can only assume that the worry is is that the discussion forums would be filled with chats.
